I just bought a 1991 318is, how do i know if it has an LSD? Are there numbers i should look for or markings or something, or did US spec 318s even come with a LSD?

LSD was optional; look for a painted S on the housing, and the metal tag on the differential should start with an 'S' - for example, 'S410 xxx'.

....take a turn hard, stomp on it in 2nd. if the rear inside wheel spins then its not an LSD, if the car accelerates or starts to go sideways you have an LSD;)......or you could jack up the rear end and spin one rear wheel while having a freind hold the other and see if the one that your freind is holding is trying to spin, if so then you have an LSD.
or you could go with option 3, and do what ak96ss said.

Even easier is to jack one wheel up with the car in neutral. If it is hard to turn then you have a LSD.
