Title: Turns off in middle of Highway
Post by: Zilla on July 19, 2007, 12:05:06 PM
SO yesterday morning I was driving down the highway and it turned off on me.   I had driven it for about a week with no problems at all.  I pulled over and tried turning it on but it wouldn't crank.  At all, if i waited like 5 min and tried to crank, you could hear the starter for about half a second then nothing again.  What could it be?  I changed the alternator btw if it helps...Also all fuses seem to be okay,

Esy

Do you have 12 volts at the battery? Is the battery in good shape .
Sounds like something maybe draining the battery .
More info is needed .
good luck

sounds more like a shot alternator, or a slipping belt on the alt, or some loose wires on the alt.

Yea I just changed the battery recently, The radio wasn't working cause the fuse was blown on the back of it, I replaced the fuse, and I connected it and it started working, the radio was only working for one day, do you think that the radio may be draining it?

Also, I had recently changed the fan clutch, and I had really had a tough time with getting a grip of the pulley on the fan clutch, do you this may have caused the belt to loosen up?

Here is some new information that may help:

Yesterday I came home and went to the car.  Tried to start it but not start, and the battery was completely dead.  SOo... this led me to believe it is something with the alternator.   I hooked up the jumpers to my 325 and gave the 318 some juice, it turned on.  But right when I would disconnect the jumpers, the car would die.  Also the engine was kinda vibrating more than usual.  Like it barely had life in it.

If its the alternator what tests can I do to make sure the alternators not working??? I checked the belts and they seem to be fine, there are the same tension.  Thanks guys

charge up the battery and start the car.
Put a voltage meter at the battery and see if you getting between 13-14 volts while it is running.
If you are then the alternator is probably ok. Then  there is probably something draining the battery .
