just bought a 1991 318is want to make in air intake seen cars be for with the mesh in the head lights so this is what i plain to do...
This is my Idea, take the air filter box out and the drivers side high beam light, weld up an adapter from the MAF sensor going straight out to the light put a cone filter on it. ill put aluminum mess in the headlight hole (paint it black like my grill i made). then have a pipe going through the size of the light in front of the filter so its going to ram the cold air into the filter. but in the rain it wont really work so I'm going to make a sheet metal plate that slides into a guide inside the pipe thats in the head light bucket to stop water then just take it out on sunny days. if any one has seen any thing like this and has pics thats would be great help. or any suggestions or ideas.

Hi. Glad to see another addition to the M42 ranks. I've had 2 over the past year and a half. The first one I had my buddy was working on with me. He lost one of the headlight retainer springs so for about 3 months I drove without the driver-side hi-beam. Honestly I had an issue with mine that seems to be what you want to do with yours. I know it seems like it looks cool, but I didn't notice a bit of difference in power with our without the headlight in. The amount of air your getting from around the headlight assembly and grill, let alone the air from under the car, is plenty for the power.
If you want to try to gain some more power quickly, removing the power steering belt helps. There are some different schools of thought on that and one of the big deliberations with me is that my mechanic step-father and BMW state that with the power steering pump not running it can deteriorate the system. But all the guys I've talked to in here and in my local area say they haven't had any issues with it being disconnected. (I'm going to get with my mechanic on that issue though. I'll get back to the forum on that). Also high-flow cats are nice (picked one up for $30 from an exhaust website).
These engines are pretty high-output as a stock engine, it only gets more power and fun the more you add to it. What all are you wanting to do? Is it going to be a commuter car (gas milage) or strictly fun (who gives a crap about milage).

A chip will do wonders for our cars most guys suggest Mark D. although I bought a Dinan before knowing this. Good for about HP gain: 12HP Torque: 14 ft/lbs Rev limiter and top speed limiter raised and listed. 91+ Octane required, also the part throttle and low end will definetely be improved which a CAI which you are contemplating will never touch. Good luck with the m42 experience.

thanks for the help i was just thinking about the intake idea something neat and i am going to drive it every day keeping power steering but I'm going to loose the AC don't need it in NS Canada. i have a header and 2.25 inch exhaust with no resonator i put a magnaflow hight flow cat and muffler on it its loud and sounds kinda funny but its cool and it will be fun. later on maybe change it up a little make better sound and tone it down a little. i want to get a chip whats a place that will ship them to Canada? and what chips are good and bad?

it wont hurt it. actually on my last 318 i ran no fluid (it had a leak) and no pump (obviously) for about 20 months with no problems.

are those numbers for the Mark D chip or the Dinan? I've been looking for the Mark D numbers forever and havent found them...until maybe now? Thanks.

haha those are pretty funny... i just happened to take a picture of my dog like that which made him look huge, but hes only a miniature dachshund.

Hooking up tubes that suck air in through mesh grilles and removing your head lamps is not going get you another horse.
just opens up the possibility that crud and water is going to get sucked into your intake
