Title: Pictures af my project
Post by: Lund8200 on July 05, 2007, 04:33:43 PM
Heres a link to a Danish forum where I have postet some pictures of my stroker project. Sorry that its all written i Danish, but do you have any questions feel free to write in here.
The short story is a M47 crankshaft and modified pistons from a Peugeot 406.

holy shit. Is that like 13:1 compression?

I suppose compression is not that high

he wrote on his web site:

Kompressionsforhold bliver udmålt. Vil holde motoren på standard 10:1.

Danish is rather easy to read if you know a little Swedish....

Word "stempler", does that mean lifter ? So, are you using Peugeot valve lifters? Was it difficult to locate M47 crank in Denmark. It seems to be rather difficult here in Finland.

Pistons are be modified so that stock compression are kept.

"Stempler" are Danish for Pistons.
For valvelifters I am using the 49 grams VW lifters.
It was not a big problem to find a used crank in Denmark, called Brdr. Schøber and they had one lying. Price was 3000 DDK = approx. 535 $.

Hi lund8200. i am olsow bilding a stroker, but with a turbo charger to.
i bougt the m47 crank from koed.dk. What piston are you using? and what rods? length?

The pistons are from a Peugoet 406 ´year 95-, 2 litre 16 valve.
Engine code is XU 10 J 4 RZ and Mahle number is 039 65 00.
Be aware of that these piston is not a Plug´n´play solution, they need modification to accept the pistonpin because they are build to work with presspin instead of circlips as on BMW.
Also valvepocket needs to be checked and freeplay for the rod.

Rods are from a BMW 1.8 M40 center to center length 135 mm instead of the M42 140 mm. I belive some M20/M50 engines use to same rodlength.

With this setup you almost have the same deckheight as stock M42, futhermore I have made a deeper "dish" to compensate for the increased volume that is being compressed in the combustion chamber. Without these "dishpocket" I would have ended up with a compression rate of approx. 11,5:1. See picture 5 (stock) versus picture 9 (after modification).

Why so low compresion ratio was selected?

To avoid pinging.
10:1 is what BMW has designed this engine to run and I will keep it that way, sure it will cost some HP, but gas with a higher octane number than 95 is hard to get here.
Later perhaps I will shave some more of the head to raise the ratio, but for a start my guess is this.
The engine will have knocksensors from a E36, if I find a way to integrate it in the wiring.
Need a complete wiring diagram for both the E30 and the E36 first.

Also I have planned to exchange the stock injectors with some from a M52 328i, Bosch number 0-280-150-440, but these use 14 ohms resistance instead for my old ones that are 16 ohms. Anyone that can confirm this?
A would it be a problem using these injectors instead?

Hi there Lund! :)

Where did you get the VW lifters and how much did they cost? I need set of them too!

with correct resistors that won't be a problem.

For refrence..

Only the non vanos model has 135mm rods (Up until and including 8/1992) Here after it's 145mm.

Is the M47 crank a direct drop in or do you have to make any modifications to make it fit in the M42?
Thanks

ive never done the swap myself, but i know some machining is required. Pretty simple from what i have read.

the crank requires some adjustments... about .5 to 1mm shaved off the end, and a woodruff cut into the end to hold the timing gear...

That engine is so clean it looks brand new. Your attention to detail is impressive. Take lots of pics before it gets dirty! :)

Gosh, that's beautiful.  Almost brings a tear to the eye.  ;)

What displacement is it?
Title: Pictures af my project
Post by: Lund8200 on October 01, 2007, 02:57:48 PM
Displacement is 2068 ccm.
Has made a deal with my buddy that the engine will be mounted 19-20 oct.
Will off course post my first experiense when turning the key....

Sorry for long waiting time...
But at last I´ve got the engine at a dyno, it made 177 horsepower and 210 Newton.
Have made approx. 5000 kilometers on it now and it still runs smoth.....

Nice numbers--I'm sure you're enjoying the new power.  Which Shrick cams did you use?

I have used the 256 degrees cam from Schrick.

Hi Lund8200, great numbers!!
I have now finished my build up with basically your same setup except for M3 pistons (321hp, S52) And mine has 11,5:1 CR
What ECU are you using? injectors?
How is your idle with the schricks on your engine? I also have schricks, but I have not mounted them yet, for the run-in period I´ll use the stock ones.
One more thing, are those wheel or crank numbers?
Title: Pictures af my project
Post by: Lund8200 on August 15, 2008, 02:48:11 AM
Im using the stock ECU and injectors from a SAAB 900 turbo, approx. 200 cc/min.
The ECU needed some changes in the parameters, but it could run with standard settings.
The first/lowest curves shows before changes where made in the ECU.
My idle are sat a bit too high, around 1000 rpm, it could easily be dropped to 900 instead and still run smoth. (Next projekt)
These are crank numbers, you would properly get higher numbers with the higher compression ratio.
Good luck with you projekt!

Great post,
great numbers.
im going to go DASC on my car, do you have figures of the stock injectors vs. the Saab ones?
did it require any modifications in the fuel rail to fit the Saab injectors?

thanks

Ron.

Hi guy, I am just back to tell you that the car is still going strong, now is has run approx. 15.000 km. with no problems at all!
Only thing that could be better is the idle, it´s a bit rough. Wondering if altering the timing of the camshaft would smooth out the idle?
Its feels like it sometimes misses a firing, has tried different plugs and new cables, last try is the coils.

It's been a while. I've only seen this thread today and I'm inspired by it. Any updates on that idle projekt and the engine performance?

Engine has now gone 30.000 km, idle is still kind of rough but I have learnt to live with it.
My wife is now driving the car, I only loan it when my E39 gets to boring.
