Title: EAT chip group buy for E30 M42!
Post by: MarkD on June 05, 2007, 07:51:32 AM
How many of you would like one of my e30 318is chips? I will be happy to run some sort of group buy.

How about:

5 to 9 orders = 10% off

10 to 19 orders: 15% off

more than 20 orders: 18% off the posted price!

It would run like this: Order your chip from the site, quote this sale code: M42CLUB-GB
and soon after the sale ends, I'll tally up how many sales came in and send the discounts. I can also post every week how many orders arrived with the sale code so you have an idea where the discount is heading.

This group buy will run from now till July 5.

This a great deal and I doubt I'll repeat these prices.

His website is in his sig.

Take a look there, I believe they're $230.

I remember back in the day when I jumped in on the bimmerforums group buy.

I scored mine for $190. Hopefully it'll happen again!

Mark,

Post this up on R3V, there may me be a couple of m42 owners over there that still haven't discovered this goldmine :)

Depending on price and delivery cost to Australia.

Also Mark can you tell me if you do anything for 95 octane fuel or if the 91 chip will need amendment to get the most out of 95.

The 91 stuff here in Oz is real rough (suitable for cleaner) and I only run my goggo mobile on 95 or better.

Thanks

Cristian

we use different ratings, RON vs MON. our 98 would probly be equivalent to the US 93 etc.

$5 extra for delivery if outside the USA.  It's usually included when you pay the regular price.
(it's included for all USA customers even with this sale)

95 RON = 91 AKI.

So my chip which is tuned for 91 AKI will work with your 95 RON.  :)

Yes I did all the tuning, but no UI don't have a dyno plot.

Why?  because I tuned this one on the street and track, as the dyno was not available then.   What's important is that the AFR is good.
At least 30 people use this chip and they are all happy campers.

If I can locate a 318iS here, I'll arrange some dyno testing but it would be at least a month from now.   The dyno will not show you the much better part throttle response and that is where these chips shine.

Add your name here if you are interested in this GB, so we can see what the interest is.

I can do a side by side if you want to send me a chip. I have a dyno at my disposal and scouts honor Ill give it back in a timely fashion. I can even do stock chip, your chip, and Dinan's chip in one sitting for a real comparison.

Are there 93 Octane and 91 Octane versions of these chips?  Or just the one version?  The website shows only one version, and only for 175 ECU's.
Title: EAT chip group buy for E30 M42!

I only saw the 91 version. Is there much of a difference between the 91 and the 93.

BTW I belive all of the e30 318's are 175-code ECU's.

Still debating on whether or not to take the plunge...

I believe all of our ECU's are 175... I could be wrong though.

Frankie,

in the past I've usually included shipping by airmail to any country outside the USA for free, but was thinking of charging $5 for it when I have a sale.   I thought about it after I posted the response to you, and figured I'll include shipping for the sale at no extra charge.

I could send them out all as the orders come in.  In that case you would have to pay full price, and on July 6 or so I'll tally up all the orders and refund the appropriate amount.  That's what I often do with other sales.  If you choose to do this, please mention M42CLUB-GB in the PayPal comments field and I'll know you are in on the GB.

All orders received by any Friday will be shipped Monday by USPS if you are in the USA.   Orders to other countries are shipped twice a week, usually Saturday and Wednesday.

I made a new version that is tuned for 93 octane.  (it was made last July).
It may work in some cars with 92, but it's a more potent chip than what I shipped as the 92 octane chip before July, 2006.   It's best to use 93 octane with it.   I need to update the website.

Is it a big advantage over the 91 octane one...because always gasing up with 94 can get expensive. Those are the only 2 options here in Quebec.

It is a noticeable difference but if you are concerned about the fuel costs, get the 91 octane chip.  It works well.

Usually e30 m42 dynofigures are around 140-150 at stock. I dynoed mine week ago and it was 144hp. Only mod was the cat-back which gives maybe 3-4hp or actually weakens the performance since the dynograph shows that the exhaust manifold flows too much.

I'll take care of the tax and shipping if you pay the $229 USD in the Canadian dollars equivalent.   So, you pay $245 Canadian and I'll take care of shipping and taxes.

(and I'll send the refund in $ Canadian also)

I run 95 RON fuel only (I think that is the same as your 93) but am just trying to work out if I can use your chip with a bigger TB or if I should wait and get a custom chip done locally.

There were posts about this earlier in this thread. Your 95 should be about equal to US 91 iirc.

Please specify "93 octane" in the comments field and I'll know to send that one out.

I'll update the website later with the 93 octane chip.

Mark,

Can you tell me how this would go with a bigger TB.

I run 95 RON fuel only (I think that is the same as your 93) but am just trying to work out if I can use your chip with a bigger TB or if I should wait and get a custom chip done locally.

Thanks

Cristian

I have not tried it with a bigger TB.   95 RON is 91 AKI, not 93.
I could add about 2% more fuel at WOT for your bigger TB.

I'm interested. How much shipping to Montreal and do we have to pay the taxes?

It actually costs me twice as much to ship in Canada as it does to ship by USPS Prioity Post in the USA!

Please send me an email, I'll tell you how much to send me in Canadian dollars.  (I have to calculate it).  Then I don't lose out on the bad exchange rate from PayPal.   I'll take care of the taxes somehow.

There are currently 12 orders on the list so if that really goes through, the discount level is 15% off $229,   = $194.65 !

If you order, you'll be the second person to actually pay.

Email sent to your gmail, Mark.

I saw an email with an address, but I didn't see any payment in PayPal.   Someone with the same first name who is in the USA ordered an M42 chip but I assume that's not you as you are in Canada.

Since all your email contained was an address and nothing else, I wasn't sure what to do.  I sent a response earlier today.

Just an FYI Mark, the end of this GB is right after the 4th, when I'm assuming many people are on vacation. If you extend the GB a little bit longer, possibly into the weekend, you may get more sales.

Oh good god....this thing is awesome.  If BMW sold the 318 like this from the factory, they never would have sold any M3s.  Gobs more torque down low, part throttle is much better, and you can't help but hit 7k on damn near every shift.  Good work, Mark.

Hi Robin,

It sure has taken a long time to get this GB going, maybe if you had ordered and posted your feedback 3 weeks ago these guys would have been a bit quicker to order the best M42 chip on the planet.  :D

I had picked that date as I thought I'd end it on July 4th.  I guess I could end it on Tuesday July 9, and see what happens.  I don't think it will make much difference, considering that the GB was announced quite a few weeks ago.

I just ordered mine as well. Can't wait!

Mark, I ordered a 91 chip, but I noticed some raves about the 93 chip. Gas stations around here have 93 octane, but what would happen if you had a 93 chip had to fill it up with 91 in a pinch? Could I possibly receive a 93 chip instead of the 91 chip?

I responded to your email earlier today.  Sure I will send you a 93 octane chip if you want one of those.

If you could not get 93 and have that chip, put in as little fuel as possible  (don't fill the tank)  so you can fill up with higher octane ASAP.  Also, you should drive without accellerating hard so you don't put a big load on the motor.  You'll be fine as long as it doesn't ping/detonate.

The USA orders are usually shipped via USPS Priority Post every Monday from Columbus, Ohio.  So they should start arriving next Wednesday or Thursday.

I'm sending them back via PayPal.  I had planned to do it this past week but had a bunch of work to do.   I have to count up the total, and I'll post it here.  I think I just got one or two more.   The discounts will definitely go out this weekend.

Great! Yea this is my first part/mod or heck anything Ive purchased for this car. Ive only owned it for about 2 weeks haha...

Is it hard at all to install the chip??? And does it come with instructions?
I know that sounds like a huge newb question being that I already bought the chip but I am a very new to this car and BMW's.

Its pretty easy, but your fingers have to work a bit more gingerly than when you are, say, yanking out a tranny, and you do want to be careful because you can mess up some electronics if you do something wrong. Here's some good write-ups:

Cant wait to get the chip though...should I be checking the mail for it sometime this week??

In addition to the two links to instructions posted above, there is this one:

Chip is here and installed. 93 octane. Got the refund as well. Thanks for hosting the GB Mark, it has been a pleasure working with you.

As for the chip, midrange is infinitely better, and I can keep up with traffic without going over 3k rpm (not that I ever drive that slow ;) ). Fuel economy seems to be about the same. The best part is being able to spin the wheels going into second ;) as well as the 7k rpm redline. It's like a whole new car!!

Well i installed my Chip today Mark! Took me about 25 minutes because of all the annoying clips on the Motronic box lol...But man its a very noticeable difference over stock! It idles very smooth upon start and all throughout smooth revving...Big power gain it felt like too:D And yes I decided to test the rev limiter at 7150 (although it scares me to rev that high) and it came on right after the 7k mark and bounced nicely for about a second then I stopped cuz I felt like I was hurting my car haha...all in all I absolutely love the chip and I cant wait for suspension and other mods!

Thanks Mark!:D

Hi Vlad,

thanks for your order.  I'll give you 10% off.  This applies to anyone else who didn't get in on the GB action and get 15% off also.

I updated my site today and you can order the 93 octane version from there now.

My site will be completely renovated in September!

The Metric Mechanic guys use a dyno in Springfield at a place that specialises in Saab (I think)   Is that were you are going?

Title: 93 chip
Post by: Blackice on September 04, 2007, 12:55:37 AM
It has been a while since I installed the 93 octane chip in to my 318i. And yes, I am sure that nothing new will be said here..... But I thought it was important to say how impressed I am with this chip.

This chip has changed my car. It is like there is a new engine under the hood. smother idle, much better low end, improved mid range, and snappier throttle response. All in all, a much nicer car to drive around town.

Always thinking that a chip would be in my future, since I want to do some auto cross, I never gave a thought to how it would improve the car for the day to day drive. But the changes it made to the daily commute, has made this, my best purchase to date.

Thanks Mark !

is there is significant performance difference between the 91 and 93 octane chips?  we have 92 octane here, but i travel to places where there is only 91.  it seems like most people have been getting the 93, though.  so, is there a big diff?

It's not a good idea to use the 93 octane chip on 91 octane.

Is anyone else looking for a chip?   I'be received a few emails from people saying they would like one and missed that GB.   I can only take $10 off now as the exchange rate is already taking off about $130 CAN from my revenue compared with two years back.

Two years ago, $229 USD = approx. $350 CAN    :)

Now:

Live rates at 2007.10.19 11:55:17 UTC
229.00 USD = 221.355 CAD     :(

Title: EAT chip group buy for E30 M42!

New rev limit is 7100 or 7150 rpm, although I only ever go to about 6700, which is the stock limiter. I don't know exact numbers, but there is a significant increase in low speed torque and high-end power.

Hello Everyone,

I haven't been on here since early November 2007 as I had a contract job which kept me very busy until last week.  I was at the client's site each day and spent 10 days in Detroit in Late Jan / early Feb.  (it was an automotive project)

Sure if there is enough interest I'll run a GB,  just sign up here and I'll work out a discount.  It probably won't be as big as past discounts only because of the bad $USD/$CAN excahnge rate, but I will make it worth your while to order one.

And if you ordered a chip from me in 2008, I'll send you the discount also!

Please click the link on my CONTACT page to send email, that way it is sent to my gmail address also.     It's true I sometimes miss responding due to all the emails I get and due to the fact I was working at a client's site for the past 4 months, but I'm back at my home office and will attempt to respond to all emails.

Put your name on the list, when there are at least 10 chips wanted you can send the funds.  (send $229 minus the 10% discount, which equals $206.10 )
PayPal is the best Payment method, unless you are picking it up in Toronto.

I'll send each order out by USPS Priority post from Ohio.  Chip orders are usually mailed out on Monday mornings.

Orders outside the USA and Canada are shipped by SMALL PACKETS from Canada.

Mark if you read this what is the HUGE difference between the 91 and the 93 octane chip.  Is there a very big increase with the 93 over the 91.  I can get 93 without an issue but in case I am on a trip and can only find 91 i am questioning it.  If there is a not a huge difference then it might be better to stick with the 91.  But if it is worth it then 93 it is.

I only put 93 in now anyway.

Also one of these will be used with the m42 in my 2002.  That m42 does not run AC or power steering and it does not have a cat.  Will this chip still be good for that engine?

i guess we just wait for mark to take a look at this thread.

and to answer your other question, i think i remember him saying that the 93 is a pretty noticable difference from the 91.  what im going to do when i go on trips is just bring or install my stock chip.

I can only get 91 octane around here but it would sure be nice to get the performance of the 93 chip.  Does anyone know if there is a reasonably cheap octane booster that i could buy in bulk and count on to provide the extra 2 octane without spending too much in the long run?  Would this be safe?

Please pay on the website, and put M42CLUB-GB in the comments, that will remind me to send you a 10% refund.  I'll send the refund within 24 hours of seeing your order.  That's a bit easier than making individual PayPal "request to pay" invoices for each of you.   If you happen to forget to mention the group buy when you order, you can send me an email and mention the discount code in the subject line.

My shipper in the USA has alsmost run out of the small black antistatic boxes which we ship the chips in and they are on backorder  for about 2 more weeks, so we will be use an antistatic tube to ship these chips.  (only applies to USA orders).  The tube will be sent in a USPS Priority Post envelope.  He usually processes the orders on the weekend.

Just email if you have specific questions, or post here if they may apply to others also.

Thanks

No, don't use octane booster.  (unless you are adding 102 AKI race gas)  :)

Yes there is a quite noticeable difference between the two chips, but don't worry about it, the 91 octane chip works very well also.

And for people outside the USA, I'll mention again that 91 AKI is close to 95 RON, and 93 AKI is around 97 RON.

It's a very noticable difference in torque, but if you are worried about finding 93 on occasion, I'd suggest getting the 91 octane version.  ANother thing you can do:  if you are forced to use 91 temporarily, don't accellerate hard as that puts a bigger load on the motor.  Just take it easy and you will probably not hear any pinging, and will be able to drie till you find 93 again.

Do you have the O2 sensor installed and working?  Then you should be OK.  The chips are made for stock motors and exhausts, but small deviations in the exhaust are usually OK.   Reducing backpressure requires more fuel, but I doubt it will be running too lean as I richen up the fuel compared to stock.

Post by: jakeb on March 18, 2008, 07:03:57 AM
alright thanks
I will place the order tonight.

My 2002 with a m42 does have a working o2 sensor and it also is running a resonator and a muffler so it should be fine.

I will think about the 93 vs 91 before I order.  I will probally go with the 93 as it is usually never an issue to get it.  And if there is a big difference then it is worth it.

Does the chip affect mpg all that much?  At least in cruise conditions.  I understand I will more than likly want to push it more so that will affect the mpg....

What have you noticed in performance/tuning differences between cars w/a CAI & magnaflow? Just curious if you have a basemap you could burn me with those. Need every last HP for STS.

What is your opinion on a cold air intake with the M42 in the first place? I'm looking to max out area under the curve, and just curious if a CAI will do ANYTHING for power, or if its just a 7lb weight savings and a lot of noise.

BTW... anyone install their chip recently? How was it the first time you drove with it?

True, any octane over the required octane will be safe, but if you go too high, you can loose power as the fuel burns too slowly.     I had someone call yesterday and tell me how well my 93 octane M20 chip worked in his racecar at mid-Ohio this past weekend with 109 octane!   Now I was expecting it to lose power but he said it worked really well.

I got lucky and bought a car with the 93 octane chip installed by the PO and I have to say that it's a very good thing.  There's a very clear bump in power from 3500 rpm on up.  My car is pretty well sorted and it's quite an entertaining ride while being entirely practical for commuting.  I'm coming out of an M30 equipped E34 with a 5 speed and while I think the old 5 will still pretty easliy outrun the 318, I don't miss the big car that much.  The little beast is suprisingly strong between 70-90mph, too.  If your car has good brakes and the suspension is in order, I'd say that it's the next logical step.

Well done!

hey mark, i got the chip yesterday.  how about sending some GB discount love my way too?

by the way, the instructions you sent me were wrong - they were for the E36 318's.  i spent half an hour trying to find the ECU through the hood firewall, only discover that it's only accessible through the glove box.  i was finally able to take it out, but i got stuck because i didn't have a torx wrench handy.

to those of you who've done the installation - do i have to open it up via the torx screws, or can i open it up by bending back the tabs on the bottom?

thanks,
matt

I think militarty discount is 15% so unless we have atleast 20 people were not going to hit the 18% mark. from 10 to 19 people its 15% off soo you might be better off going with the military discount.. but I guess you'd have to speak with mark to find out how many people have alredy got a chip... and what discount we qualify 4. I've been waiting to hear from mark.. I am defently in on this G.B. hopefully he shows up soon. I want that chip already lol.. maybe i will send him a p.m.

I built a new PC and set it up over the weekend so was not checking in here.   What were you waiting to hear about?

The 15% military discount is the way to go if you qualify for it.

The current discount on the GB is 8%, as mentioned.  You should look at it as more of an immediate 8% off, as I'll send the refund  within a few days or receiving your order and your chip gets shipped out on the next shipping cycle.   This way, nobody  has to wait till the GB comes together.    I think I only had enough people to offer a 10% discount last time, so 8% is still good.   Don't forget to mention M42CLUB-GB  in the comments field.

If people want to go for a true GB again, with slightly larger discounts and the discount sent at the end of the GB "buy window"  let me know.  You may save a few more $ but would have to wait longer to get the discount, (till the end of the buy window) so I know what discount to apply.  There's probably only a small extra saving to do it that way.

Thanks,

Mark

I'm not sure why the article you linked refers to the garbage situation as a "strike" as it's simply a matter of no place to put it. The landfills are full and whenever a site is proposed everyone screams NIMBY.

Anyone else interested in an M42 chip?     I could run another sale ... let's call it the Labour Day sale.  9% off the regular $229 price, and you don't have to wait for a GB, just order and I'll ship it out, and refund the discount.  Or, just send me $209 and mention the chip you want, and the discount code of M42-LDS

Are any of you going to be at Oktoberfest at Watkins Glen? I'll be there all week, and on the track on Wednesday.    http://www.bmwccaofest.org/

I'm interested in the chip for my 91' 318i.  would like the 91octane chip.  Also i'm in the Toronto area.

Give me a call and you can drop by to pick it up, if you still want one.

I'll be at Watkins Glen this coming week so yoiu can get it either before or after Oktoberfest.

Title: Nov/Dec 2008 GB?
Post by: roundel318 on November 11, 2008, 03:22:03 PM
I am in the market for a EAT / Mark D chip, I spoke to Mark and he said he is OK to do another GB if we get 5 heads.
Anyone interested in going in? Mark states a 8% savings.
I have a Dinan chip now and want to try Mark's 93 octane chip :D

I'll take one.  91 octane.  I can be found on bf.c as a moderator or you can send an email to timrmoore at gmail.com when the time comes to order one.  For some reason the PM system here usually doesn't get to me.

Up to 4 on the GB, not far now :)

It's good to see a bit of interest here as sales have been very slow, around 4 sales in the last 2 months.

Because the $CAN had dropped to around $0.79 USD  (it was as high as $1.10 USD earlier in the year)    I can offer the same  (better)  pricing I had a year ago!

5 to 9 orders = 10% off

10 to 19 orders: 15% off

And if I receive 5 or more orders paid for before Saturday at noon, I'll take off an extra 3% from those earlybird orders.

Have a great Thanksgiving!

Mark

As a few more people have been showing up asking, we will keep our current GB heads and push for 10+ heads. I would bet in a week or two we can get something going with a few more kids :)

Jumped in on the GB thread on R3V (http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=124397).  I assume it's all part of the same deal since the quoted message from Mark is identical. :D

We have indeed decided to hold out for the 10 head discount.
I will go through the thread when it comes time and send everyone reminders that is in to pay Mark. While I am not sure he will have us do the same thing, the last time he had people just complete the checkout and he issued a partial refund.
I imagine we will hear from Mark sooner or later :)

From what I just counted, I see five people (includes me) who are interested?
This would put us exactly half way :)

For the "early birds":

I was thinking 10% off if I get 5 to 9 orders, 15% off if I get more than that, and and extra 3% if the order is received by Saturday.

Maybe you can still sneak in for the extra 3%?

Originally, those discount levels were supposed to be "per forum".  What I mean by that is if the M42club members bought 8 chips they would get 10% off and an extra 3% if they order by today.   Meanwhile, if the R3V  guys bought 12 chips they would get 15% off.    Now I've deceided I better just combine the orders and give everyone the same discount.    I'll tell you, I didn't expect the number of orders I have had in the last 3 days.   I just got 18 orders in that time, and it usually takes 3 months to get that number of sales.

So everyone gets 15% of and a further 3% if the order arrives today.  :)

Yay!  Glad business is picking up for you.  Did you happen to get my email ?  I forgot to mention the group buy in my purchase, so I emailed you.

I got your order, but no email!   I decided to give everyone who ordered the discount, whether or not they mention it.  I don't think it's fair not to give them the deal, just becuase they don;t hang out here or on one of the other forums.

Thanks,

It's been slowing down each year for the last 3, and this year it got to the point that chip sales were becoming just a sideline.  I had to go and find more contract firmware development.   I realise that chip sales will never support me, each year there are less cars and more of those cars have the chips.    But a little "flash in the pan"   of sales always helps! :D

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.   The sale went really well, breaking all previous GB sales records.   I guess that's because so many from E30 and R3V also participated.    I extended the early bird discount till today, so everyone ordering till today gets 21% off and if you after from Monday till Dec 5, it's 17%  off.
