So, a couple years back, someone gave me a DINAN chip for an M42. It had a sticker with a part number on it and now that sticker is gone [hardened adhesive, blown away?].
I never installed it because I could not confirm if it was the exact chip for my ECU or not.
It's burned onto an ST Micro 89017
M27256-2FI eprom
I vaguely recall someone saying they *thought* that it's from a super early E36 318is. My car is a super late E30.
So, what are the ramifications of installing this into my ECU and going for it?
If the car starts, will I feel a difference?
Is this a risky proposition? Is it worth it?
Can anyone read this thing and tell me what it is?
It sure would be nice to gain a few horsepower for free. :D

nobody?

You will probably have to contact Dinan. My experience is that they aren't too helpful on older models. I sent them an e-mail once asking about their sway bars for an E30 and never received a response.

the really sucky thing is I posted about this chip ages ago on e30tech, I tried to research my ollllld post and it doesn't turn up.

woooooooooooot after some intense searching, I found it.
Dinan D900-1834E chip

EPROM chips are just blanks, like empty video cassettes. What you burn on to them is what counts. No you won't hurt your ECU trying to run a program on the "wrong" chip.

heh I know what an EPROM is... I work in the Silicon industry :D
I guess I'll pop it in an see. Some electronics are more sensitive than others, and these ECUs are not cheap if you fry one... so I thought I'd ask in case anyone has done this before.

with some further searching, it appears this is no longer a mystery chip. it's from a 1993 318. the ecu should end in #990. if it doesn't apply to my car, it'll be up for sale, cheap. stay tuned.

I called Dinan today, no callback. Nice long-term support, eh? :(

My E30 M42 ECU ends in 175...

I want to publicly thank Dinan for the return phone call.
Not.
