Title: Cleanest way to change filter?

So I changed the oil and dribbled some oil over the side accidentally. The great thing is that the belts are right there so they can be drenched in oil if you slip, as well as having oil dump onto the radiator hose.

Any tips other than being super careful or putting rags everywhere?

its only an oil change.. some fresh oil that is quickly wiped up wont really damage any belts or hoses.. its the constant drenching of an oil leak that could do some damage.  

what i do when pullin the old filter out is lift it about an inch or so and let some of the oil drain out..  then juss pull and wipe the mess.. aint nothin to it

It's aggravating at least this first time. It'll become second nature soon I'm sure.

I need to do a heavy degrease of the engine bay and then do some gasket replacements soon. I think it's just my valve cover for now but also some of the breather hoses had cruddy oil in them, need to check that out.

Also, if you can afford it, its a good idea to run a quart or two through the system with the oil pan plug out to flush any old oil out.

My oil catch has a lid which is meant to allow filters to drain, I lift the filter up just enough and quickly slide that under. No mess.

Try a paper plate if nothing else.
