A guy near me has an M42 head for sale w/ a bent valve. He said the PO didn't set the timing right and bent a valve as a result.
Does this sound correct?
Is this head reusable, w/ the simple replacement of a valve?

It sounds possible. Get pics of the head and make sure it isn't cracked or worn around the valves. Otherwise, I think that you would just have to replace the valves, maybe lifters too.
Most if not all of the valves will be bent depending on if the engine ran on the wrong timing or if it was just started for a second and then shut down.

Yes, you can bend a valve if it is not timed properly.
Is it catastrophic, that depends.
Only way to know is to have a engine shop take a look to make sure only the valve is bent.
