Title: Am I crazy?
Post by: FL318is on May 23, 2007, 08:24:30 PM
Please vote your true feelings.  This car is going to college in August.  There was a father son talk and good grades meant he could take my baby to college.  It may help in the pursuit of academic excellence or it may get frat party debris.

Depends on the college and what the other students generally drive. I went to Ohio U and you park something that nice in a student lot its asking to have beer dumped in the microfilter and other horrible things done to it.
Now you go to someplace like Miami and the average student has daddy buying them a new car every year or so, nobody would even notice the car.

depends on your son, but i could see this as the point where the car takes a turn for the worst. I am 21, i see lots of this shit take place, there is a small few who would actually care for the car, and the rest will treat it the same way they would treat an old beat up civic. That is a damn nice car, and it should not go through the college beating. Even if your son is a good kid, likely some untrustworthies will end up in it one night... need i say more?

OH, and a car like that will never aid in the persual of excellence. I'm approaching my 3rd year as an business/accounting student and the other kids in my class who drive cars their parents bought them have no concept of money, generally end up broke the first year out and unable to pay their loans. What you gotta do is provide some sort of incentive for your kid to do well in school. Perhaps get him a reasonably nice car, then say depending on his grades buy him something nice for it.

Thanks guys.  I hear ya.  I know the car is going to get beat.  I agree on an incentive program.  I need to find a reasonable set of expectations or just write the car off.  I will keep the word I gave and hopefully there will not be too much beir spilled.  Bottom line, its a car and a son is much more important.

I agree with the point you make about just giving something and it  being taken for granted.  In that regard I am pretty fortunate.  The pursuit of excellence point was more of a cloaked reference to the appeal it does seem have with some, not all members of the opposite sex.

LOL, BTW I just looked at the votes.  Seems I hold a substantial lead in the polls!

Youre sending your kid to college in a modified E46, a black scratch-prone one no less. Yup, I gotta say you're crazy on this one. I'm in highschool and I'm afraid to take my 318is to school, mainly because I spent good money on it. Imagine if my parents had bought it....

I know too many people whose parents have bought them nice cars and they beat the crap out of them. I hope your son is responsible and knows how lucky he is to have a father like you ;)

Well I'm the only guy to say NO :) I think it's awesome that a little bit of incentive kept his grades on the straight and narrow.. He's worked hard, and hard work deserves reward! If he F's it up, make him fix it,, that's also a part of life :)

The e46fanatics forum might think you're crazy for not giving your son the E30 instead. ;)

If you made a deal, I guess you have to stick to it but if you're son got good grades in the first place then I'm sure he's responsible as well, although I know some things won't be in his control either. Just set forth some guidelines/restrictions/limitations, etc and see if he and the car survives the 1st semester. I hope your son isn't good looking. Good looking young guy + awesome looking E46 = 1 or more knocked up chicks. ;)

Worst case scenario, he totals your car which gives you a good excuse to the wifey to get a E30 M3 or any other car you lust for and not expect your son to ever ask you to borrow any of your cars any longer. ;)

Damn, I didn't know you had a son ready for college. You're probably on the internet more than he is. :D

Thanks guys.

Yeah this is pretty exciting.  I have put together a list of requirements and a 25 question written test and a road test. This will culminate in a cross country final and a cigar.  Gotta pass the tests to get the keys.

As far a lucky to have me as a dad, thanks but without the EMO factor playing into the equation, truth be known I am the lucky one.  Bottom line, being a dad is as good as it gets.  Those that are know what I'm talking about and those that aren't will see what I'm talking about.

Because he takes after dad he is amazingly handsome so there will hearts breaking all over campus. Man I didn't think about the prego factor:eek:

Am I that transparent?

LOL!  That term still cracks me up, every time!

He will hopefully be fine.  After he gets there he will probably dump the Emo thing.

LOL, actually by reference to EMO I meant to describe the sentimental transference of the luck preception.  I thought I might be sounding "sappy"  but in truth, my son is pretty dang amazing, I am really blessed with a great son. In truth he is more of a sports fanatic than anyone I ever met.

"What goes around comes around" That saying is true for me as my dad used to spoil me when I was young. I would do anything for him to pay back the favor and when he retires next year, I plan on supporting him for the rest of his life if he needs anything.

You make sacrifices for your son now and I'm sure it will come back full circle later in life.;)

Well boys.

All the driving tests are done, the written test finished.  Insurance is taken care of.  Need to get 2 new g-Force T/A KDWs and finish installing the sub woofer and its off to college.

I don't know who is more excited me, for sharing in the excitement or my son who gets the excitement.

I will keep this thread updated.

I agree with the earlier post. It depends on the school as to what happens to the car as it will be sitting most of the time. A liberal arts school in a small town in Ohio would be ideal. A big school in the middle of a large metropolitan area, the worst.  But then if you can give the car to your son and possibly write it off, who cares. I went to Ohio University and a car was a PITA. Everything was close in except the parking lot. I have just finished sending three daughters to school in 10 year old Hondas.

I'll probebly end up with a 10 yr old honda when I go to college...I'm to much of a perfectionist to let my E30 into harm's way... ;)

I don't know if installing a sub is a good or bad thing as that is one more thing that can go wrong with potential thieves. I would caution your son on taking the proactive approach and not play it loud anywhere he lives or is about to park as thieves will be watching him and waiting for the right time to strike.  I guess living in a big city, I'm always thinking anti-theft mentality.

Shitty cars are more fun in college to pound on.  I bought a new car every year just because I could.  Two Escorts, 86 S10 Blazer, and a Cavalier later I was done.  Stick a cover on it and get a beater for school you don't mind your friends barfing in.  It's hard to do maintenace on a car too, I'd rather have a car you don't even bother changing the oil in.  Just bring the heat to school every once in a while so you can get laid.

I dont think your crazy at all if your son respects cars as much as you do.

One of my best friends cares for his e46 m3 more than anyone I know cares for their cars and his parents bought it for him right when he graduated high school. He will be going to a local private college this fall semester and will be driving his M3.

Just make sure your son knows the responsibilities that come with a BMW let alone an e46. Keep track of when it needs serviced as being in college may distract him from his cars necessities...just my .02$

Gary,
after meeting your son during your tour of the base.  Now without reading all the response everyone has given you I thought I would give you my thoughts without their influence.  I have a 2003 330ci with 32k miles since I decided to get me a luxury car (750 iL) to drive when I do travel a long distance.  My 19 year daughter who I told you was thinking of going the same college as your son but decided Penn State instead, she taking the 330ci to school.  Maybe we are both crazy.  so having your son take that gorgious machine to school I think it's not crazy at least you can say you have arrived to the point of enabling you to grant some luxury to your kids.  Hey at least we are sending them with a car that can take what ever they dish out and will not worry us breaking down.

I really love this place.

My initial vehicle of choice for college was the WWII Sherman tank.  But, because they had no air bags the next logical choice is the E46! ()

I like the feed back and appreciate it all.  OT and I should start a Foudation called something along the lines of "Give the Kids a Bimmer."  LOL.  All things being equal, I am happy about the decision and when the car goes to college I realize it will also be coming home (from time to time) with him in it.  He is going to a old, established university where I believe the locals don't "cotton to any mis-behaving."  I have established contacts within the CCA community and have AAA and the local BMW repair shop in the loop.

Now if I could just get the ac going in my car.

BTW, the difference in age between a college student and a dad is directly proportional to the amount of speakers and woofers in a car.

Thanks guys!

I'm not so sure about this one. I am 16 and have no woofer(s) and no desire to get any.

Good luck to your son at college.
