Title: E36 M42 into E30
Post by: sleighbmw on May 10, 2007, 11:32:19 PM
Howdy

I am starting on an engine rebuild due to a cracked head.
To keep me going while all this happens I have bought an E36 M42 from a wreck
to drop into my 1990 E30 318is.
I have bought the complete motor with all ancillaries and also the ECU.
I am expecting the motor to come with the serpentine belt setup - is this correct ?
I have also heard there are issue with the sump, and that I may have to swap the E30 sump and oilpump onto the E36 motor - is this correct ?

I'll keep you posted as the motor rebuild progresses, but plans at this stage are
M47 crank - purchased and on its way
Schrick cams - anyone know a good source for these for an Australian.
S50 pistons - either 86/86.4mm - source unknown
Rods - still need to work this out - aiming for 10.5:1 compression

Stage 1 is to fit these parts and see how it goes.
Further development could then look at ITBs, solid lifters etc.

Appreciate any comments
Cheers
Simon

congrats! enjoy yer stroker. You will probably need custom rods for best results, although you can follow gizmo318i thread on bimmerforums.

A couple of guys here have done the E36 swap, the issues are relatively minor, hopefully they will chime in.

post pics and keep this thread updated on your progress; people have a lot of questions about what you are trying to do.
