OK, so I'm another one e30 enthusiast...
I was born 10 07 1979 in Cracow in Poland, where I live now.
My hobby is E30 318IS...
I earn by making furniture and stone finishings in domestic interiors.
I like doing nice things, like design furniture.
I've spent 7 months on reading http://www.e30tech.com threads and I've finally found the m42club somewhere there!!!

So , nice to meet You!!!
-
welcome. i can't wait to see pics of your car.
-
The pics, right... I will take some and place them as the progress will go on...
I am still thinking about the colour...
I've bought the base paints already...
I was aiming RAL8022 which is black with a tone of chockolate, and the finishing paint which is just as flat as posiible...
How do You think? Flat black, with glossy black rims, and whole shadowline black and glossy too?
The other idea was glossy black, with polished alluminium rims and red taillights...
The third idea was flat black/8022/ with black glossy rims and the rest: frontlights , rearlights and roof painted RAL1013 which is most likely some kind of ecru colour....
How do You think? I'm going to spray my filling base paint in few weeks... Just after comes the colour...
My wife says that RAL 5010 Enzianbleu is an option, or more classic -> Ferrari Red...
I'm interested in what is Your opinion about the colours.
I know that there is very few flat painted cars, so I like the idea, for now the car is already red, so I don't feel the idea of Ferrari red..
I wanted something definately individual so the idea of black/ecru was ideal for me espacially because of theese lamps painted ecru...
But I'm most likely to paint the car just the oposite way than stock black -> flat black with glossy black shadowline and rims... The idea is to pain it that way, to differ parts by glossyness not by the colour.
But is seems to act as the devil itself when all the parts becomes black...
-
Sounds like your car has had a lot of work done to it!
I say no to flat black...that's kind of Civicish. What if you did a green or a blue? That would definately be different.

Flat metallic silver FTW..
Welcome a bored Abrax..
-
Czesc,
It is nice to see here neibhours ;)
-
Flat black I meant cotally matt -> When glossy is 100% I meant 10% of glossyness...
Civicish - > You say honda look :-)???
Green, I was thinking about it... Any special colour? Like "racing green" which was used by english cars???
Blue car is just as cute as a small child's toy - I don't want to make a toy... But a navy blue is a different story.
A lot done to it... Yes... It revs to 7300RPM's hitting just 195 km/h with 3.73 differential -> 205 km/h with 3.64LSD On a 1st gear it reaches nearly 70km/h heh - below 8secs do 100km/h Nice car at winter as I don't slow down because of the slippy roads... Just Slideways all the time...
Till now I had to leard how to drive it - now it is time to make a beauty...
-
welcome aboard.
I visited Cracow a few years ago. Had a great time drinking mass quantities of Pivo, I believe the brand was schivietz (sp??). Anyway, I met a great girl from there too ...;)
-
cracow - magical place they say...
Did You know that we have just over 500 / it's not a joke - five hundreds/ pubs/discos/restaurants in the nearest area of main square ??? They all placed just about 15 minutes of walking far from the most sided places....
Some use the map with the names of the places... The rule is that after drinking one beer or one vodka shot, the barkeeper signs them the name of the place... And they go for the next shot just somewhere else... After a few You don't count the signs... And the day after You can't even believe how many beers You've already drunk and how many places You have visited... !!!

Something along those lines is what I mean. Pick whatever you want though, inevitable it's up to you and you have to live with the color so make sure you like it before you do it.
Cracow is in Poland right? Does everyone learn english there?
-
Jpod: -> I like this setup as one of the most elegant color themes ever made - Isn't Jaguar similiar?
But I will keep flat black as I want to make something really unique and agressive. The car is going to have 400HP's so it schould look spacefic...
We will see - today I've found some place in my painting schelude to place there my first part. In two weeks I will have it painted, so I will take some pictures, and we will see if this is a good idea.
Cracow is in Poland right? Does everyone learn english there?
HAHAHA - For example me.... Nearly 80% young people speak communicative english here.
I thing that You should try to visit Cracow in some time, as it became just as civilised as Berlin is for example... There is some specific polish climate, but we have made our city really european. It is unique tourists say. I know a woman from Canada, who comes here year after year different parts of the year just to drink a coffe on the main square.
It's 98% chance that You will be able to communicate with everyone on the main square. Just check the site -> http://www.cracow.pl/summer/krakow_highlights.html
And You will feel what's happening around here.
Yesterday on the main square I had to pass 9 people to meet 1 polish man or woman... As I said before, we have around 500 pubs here and it is really hard to find a place in the evening.
On the other way, a policewoman in Paris when I told her that I'm from Poland asked what is it - she didn't even know that there is a country like Poland...
It's not like that You hear around, and pleace don't take measure by people from Poland that You meet around... Cracow is the main center of intelligent people here in Poland... It's not because I live here - It's because that during World Wars we were the less ocupied city here...
-
I have never been to Europe. I really would like to go sometime and travel everywhere. But anyways, I don't want to hijack your thread.
WE NEED PICS OF YOUR CAR!!! ;)
-
So, Yesterday I've taken some pictures...
The car has just got back from the machanics, because it has broken apart just between fenders and the front of the doors they had to weld it into one iron. They made other irons too, so it needs to be repainted.
The break was caused mainly by my stupid speeding through the speed limiters in the city...
As this is just the beginning of the project and the work was not done by the most tidy people I know, it's a little bit messy there, but everybody starts somewhere :-) At last they are the best people I know capable of doing race weldings in the car.
The look at the moment:
Custom made front suspension with adjustable height:
http://www.e30.kamieniwnetrze.pl/front_suspension/1.jpg
http://www.e30.kamieniwnetrze.pl/front_suspension/2.jpg
Custom made skid plate - you can see mountings rounded red in the pictures 3 and 4:
http://www.e30.kamieniwnetrze.pl/skid_plate/1.jpg
http://www.e30.kamieniwnetrze.pl/skid_plate/2.jpg
http://www.e30.kamieniwnetrze.pl/skid_plate/3.jpg
http://www.e30.kamieniwnetrze.pl/skid_plate/4.jpg
GETRAG 225 adapted to fit the m42 block from s14 cecotto engine - we had to weld two different transmission mountings together and shorten the driveshaft a little:
http://www.e30.kamieniwnetrze.pl/transmission/1.jpg
http://www.e30.kamieniwnetrze.pl/transmission/2.jpg
And the free flow custom made exhaust system - made from two stock exhaust manifolds.
It needs to be remade and made more esthetic:
http://www.e30.kamieniwnetrze.pl/exhaust/nam42exhaust.jpg
-
So, just painted my taillights...
Here are they:
and in the sun:
The colour and the glossyness are just as deep as I wanted to achieve...
But it's too early to judge if the flat black is a good idea...
The next part - the trunk, and we will see -> as this should go flat black with glossy rearwing on it...
-
Hey All!!!
The second part - the trunk.
Pictures shows how it looked just before the work:
So I used the sandblaster to take out the rust:
And for those who would like to know how sandblaster looks like:
The small handy sandblaster for cleaning out small rusty places
(http://www.e30.kamieniwnetrze.pl/trunk/small_sandblaster.jpg)
The big sandblaster for big surfaces:
So the sandblaster does this:
And the next step after using the solid filler:
And after the liquid filler is put on the trunk:
Now three days and I will be able to plain the surface once more, to prepare it for the solid colour and the transparent finishing paint.
:-) :)
-
Nice work,
wish I had a handy sandblaster like that
-
It should be easy to buy. Just ask at Your pneumatic tools shop. And it is not expensive. I've paid about 40 euro for it 3 years ago. The proper blasting sand or jet garnet is more difficult to find. But as You buy 25kg it will last long enough for the whole car. But there are companies capable of sandblast whole big bridges. Ask them for the seller. The only thing which is rather expensive is the compressor capable of doing about 400m^3 of compressed air an hour. The pressure when the small sandblaster starts to work is 5-6 bars. But You get better result when blasting at 8-10bars. You can of corse work with the smallest compressor possible but it will eat Your time... You will spend more time waiting till it gets the pressure back, than sandblasting itself.
OK, so I've painted the inside of the trunk and plained the top surfaces. It will be painted after the weekend. Here are the pics:
Have a nice weekend!!!
-
Wow!! I bet that'll look awesome when it's done. Cosen a color for the rest of the car yet?
-
Wow!! I bet that'll look awesome when it's done. Cosen a color for the rest of the car yet?
In the very first posts already...
I've finally bought RAL8022 SchwartzBraun -> so this is the color. But the trunk will tell me if the idea of flat black was good enough to keep it for the rest of the car... ;)
BTW You can see the colour on the last picture -> http://www.e30.kamieniwnetrze.pl/trunk/surfaces_prepared3.jpg As this is the inside, I've painted it in the same colour as the rest of the car... As You can see it is not completely black, but You can feel the brown in it. The "UPS Worldwide" trucks are painted similarly but I'm not sure if the colour is the same.
And I'm still thinking about the colour - I'm worried that it will be too civicish as Jpod said...
But as far as I own a car I was wondering about flat black car...
-
I never thought It would turn out that good! Keep up the good work!
-
Thanks guys!
I've never thought that writing a thread while progress goes on could be so motivating!!! I will be updating the thread as something changes! So keep an eye on it ;)
-
Here it is after first finishing paints are on the trunk. You can see the right colour and the right glossyness. Now, You can feel the idea I was writing about in my very first posts...
Dudes - I need comments, a lot of comments before I will paint more...
So, The look at the moment:

Wow!!! Awesome attention to detail and great work in cleaning it up to a fantastic condition! I just don't know about the flat black though, I would much rather some gloss/ shine in the finish, ie: a metallic colour, etc. but that's just my personal preference! Either way though, I can't argue with the very nice job that you seem to have done right there! Looks to be in very nice shape!
Pete
-
Not sure I'm feelin the shiny spoiler on the flat black trunklid, but otherwise its purty awesome.
BTW I'm not sure how good that would look over another dark color unless the rest of the car is black. Unless it is done VERY well, it will just look like the car has mismatched body parts. Or at least that is my experience with the local multi-colored civics.
-
Love the flat black. Do the whole car. You should add some clear to the taillights, I don't think they should match the flat black of the car...and I prefer no spoiler for a cleaner look, but thats me.
Like all the DIY stuff, but those taillights just don't do it right...add some clearcoat to liven them up and stay safe at night!
-
Ditto, no spoiler!
The car looks great. Let us know if need parts.
-
You know... I can do many different things, but I've got no comparison to any other flat cars in the area. So simply I immagine the project and have to DIY and than look at it. The taillights painted flat were just following my idea of flat black car. I'm feeling that the whole work will be great, but I too see the poor details like weird look of the taillights. BTW they shouldn't be dangerous as they are like 90% translucence...
Maybe You have some photos of flat black cars up there to show them up?
I'm not going flat for all the costs. I like the idea but I can understand that this needs to be done really perfect/ i mean the right parts in the right glossyness/ to achieve really good look...
Thank You for all the comments already written!
I like the car w/o rear spoiler, but as the trunk has holes and I've already had a car with one, I like to keep it in my car.
The glossy spoiler acts nice with the glossyness of the rear window. And remember that I wanted to add glossyness to the plastic bumper parts. Just don't know if I will keep theese ideas...
So, write, write, write posts... The more, the better!!! ;)
-
Looks good without shiny spoiler ;)
I planing something like you.

-
I like the DSG car... I've seen it just before I made a decision about the flat paint.
Nice, very nice.... In the end I want to achieve very simillar look...
-
Hi all!
After a while beeing busy - I've done it with the sunroof, and interior, trunk, engine chamber - all painted black... I've also disarmed my car completely and sanded all rusty places around the irons.
So there is a little progress with my little car ;)
After several dirty / clean /dirty /clean periods with my trunk, I've decided that it is toooo flat and I will try somewhere in between 100% glossy and 10% glossy. The choice is to go 50% glossy. The look schould be more eatable without the rainbows in the transparent paint in strong sun as it is now. It will be also easier to keep clean /the paint reacts just the same, but it is harder to spot the dirt when it is more glossy/.
There is the reason, why Ferrari doesn't use completely flat paint and they spray something like 65% of glossyness on their flat painted black cars which looks so outstanding...
I will post some photos to make comparisons and ask about Your opinion in the evening,
I decided to paint the sunroof so the thread goes on this way....
-
Hi all!
After months of financial problems, I am finally restarting my bmw project.
Some of You will be dissappointed, some will say that this is a great idea. But the truth is that I've abandoned flat black project.
After long , long time I've decided to paint it glossy red with black shadowline, black wheels and black roof :-)
Pics soon. After the first day of working hard, I have changed my roof fabric - it is black as it should be in 318is :-)
Few weeks ago I've found two very rare "things" to my car:
Cruise control in perfect condition, with all needed wiring and all needed plastic parts :-)
And the second one - Air conditioning - again the complete set!
So I will mount them in and my car will finally be fitted with all I ever needed in the car :-)
-
Great work. Please keep us updated on your projects.
-
Today after work, I decided to play with calipers. I've taken them out, sanded them and dismounted them fully apart to change the rubbers with the new ones and completely cleaned them from the dirt lasting inside. I also ordered the new set of rubber seals for my completely restored calipers :)
Tomorrow the rubbers will come to my favorite shop, so I hope I will have some more to show You.
Here are the pics:
The actual state of the car:

Deadline is 15.03.2008 because we are going skiing to Italy 28.03.08 :)

Today fixed:
All the wiring taken out, new wiring revised, welded 3 big holes in the floor, turned the car upsidedown to sand the background of the car...
Pisc tomorrow:-)
-
After some days of hard working - it is now -> the success!!!
The car is beeing done after long, long time spent just there in the corner.
Already done:
Flipped, derusted and rust-protected :
Engine chamber nicely painted this gray-like color which I actually like very much for that purpose:
Today I was playing with the sanding machine and some polyester putty to make all shapes e30-like ;)
-
Success!!!
After next day spent with my automobile, it is now primered. And I am quite proud , because it is still in the shape of E30 BMW!
So - You who are planning to make all theese things listed in this post to Your car, remember, that it is good if afterall the car has the right shape ;)
The shape:
So, yesterday things finally looked this way:

And just before two hours the car was nicely looking flat black...

Hopefully tomorrow the RED...
-
can't wait to see how this looks when it's done. So far so good!
-
Finally the car is going to be red. Red as hell and only red. No flat black at all, no black roof....
You know - wifes...
But:
Today I can clearly see why they do not use furniture paints to paint the car. It is of corse possible, but it would be much easier to paint the car with the car paints. And of corse nearly three times more expencive - thats really why I am using furniture paints...
Much, much easier...
Somewhere I've seen a web page of US guy who has painted his car with nitro paint and with the roller used normally to paint walls in houses!!!! He has done his best to the car, and finally it was unexpectably outstanding with very very deep color, but he had to paint the car 12 times...
I will have to paint my car once more red, and three times clearcoat it. And it will still be half the price of car paints, but I will have to spend hours on polishing it. But after all it will be superior quality as far as I can see after today painting ;)
