I just got a Dynomax muffler welded on that I've been sitting on since the fall. My initial impression is that it sounds significantly deeper then the Bosal OEM equivalent muffler I had on previously. My problem with the Bosal was the rattly baffles led to a tinny sound that was a bit louder then I was comfortable with.
At city speeds the Dynomax is perfect much deeper and confident sounding then stock, at highway speeds it drones a bit more then I would like, I suspect I will get use to it as its really not that loud. Overall I think its well worth the money, the OEM exhaust sounded like a cheap Honda exhaust which I never felt comfortable with.

I have a dynomax and think it sound great .

My last car was a WRX catless with a Prodrive muffler. Lets just say that is a tough act to follow.
-
could you tell me the specs(inlet, outlet size) or part number of the dynomax muffler?
-
super turbo right?
-
Oh mine is magnaflow ! can't remember witch one but comes in same size as stock and sounds great ?
-
Any idea how it compares to the supersprint system as far as sound?

check this out came across it a few months ago b4 i cracke dmy head

i read that and it sold me on the dynomax. i got the super turbo on my car now with a stock cat and no resonator.. ill prolly upgrade to full magnaflow soon though... otherwise, dynomax is definitely worth the price
-
So the author of that article just cut off the rear muffler, and welded the Super turbo on? Did he leave the stock resonator?
I'm interested in a system that has NO DRONE and only gets louder when you stomp on it.
Al Greenry - I noticed you got rid of the stock resonator, did you just want it louder or something?
I'm very interested in this setup now. I'm off to Summit racing to scope out the choices.
-
im retty sure he just cut off stock muff
-
I have the Dynomax w/ Hiflow Magnaflow Cat... lets just say at first i was kind of embarassed. now i just set off car alarms
-
so you have the high flow cat and no resonator?
The key to a good sound (IMO) is the resonator. It cuts down high frequencies, and keeps it from being "17-year-old-punk-kid-loud".
I'm just trying to figureo ut if the folks who say it is only marginally louder are using the stock resonator.

Apparently! I had a straight through Dynomax on my m10 318, gutted cat, and it was surprisingly quiet. On this m42, I just got a custom bent pipe to go from the manifold all the way back, and a Dynomax is damn near unbearable at anything over 1/4 throttle. This was an IMPROVEMENT over the cheapo Thrush Turbo knockoff thing we tried at first, that was miserable. But the Dynomax still has plenty of high frequency, ricer noise. If a cop is behind me at a light, I'm going to have to coast up to speed. I am actually quite concerned that I won't be able to autocross it tomorrow it's so loud.
So yes, the cat and resonator must have been doing more than I gave them credit for.
-
I'll make a clip toevening or tomorrow of my setup, was going to do it for ages now. The cheapest setup one could ever see with new parts in Quebec: 30$ for a cheap resonator and a Raptor (http://www.holley.com/50054FLT.asp) muffler. Yes, it's raspy. Too raspy & loud to drive with windows down? Only at 5k at wide open throttle. Inside it's all good.
-
i have no resonator and it does not sound that loud.. when the engine is cold, the exhaust sounds a bit raspy, but once it warms up it sounds smooth and clean. i am not a fan of big loud exhausts (unless you have a muscle car of course, but thats another topic) and this exhaust is just right for the price.
if you cant make up yoru mind about the resonator, i suggest just leaving it on and if you want it louder, cut it off later...
edit: just reread some of the latter posts, the cat definitely adds some noise reduction. ive been catless with this dynomax and it is pretty raspy all thoughout the rpm range. too ricey for me. if i had cams and some other internals it might be worth it to go catless, but for now this is fine.. no resonator ftw!!!

AL GReeNeRy could you get some sound clips up? how loud is it in the car? it is easy to hear music and stuff?
-

Here's a clip of mine. And yes, you can hear the music inside just fine with windows closed. No droning on highway either. Overall, for 30$, I'm very satisfied.
-
sure ill try and grab a clip soon.. my sis is tha only one with a good digital camera and shes known to be stingy

Sory dude but yours sounds like shit . Big time .
That is the sound that we are all wanting to avoid .
-
no offense taken lol :P
-
I searched on youtube and all of the sounds I heard were incredibly raspy and had the high pich to them. I know each type of engine has its own sound but mt miata had a great sound to it with a jackson racing exhaust. I should have kept it and cut it up to put on the 318is.
My wife's protege5 with racing beat sounds very subtle too.
Now I'm rethinking this whole exhaust thing. I think I'd better go to a meet and hear some options first.
-
I have a Magnaflow cat and Dynomax Super turbo on my car and it sounds like that video at first, but once the exhaust starts to warm up the muffler the tinny sound goes away. I think it has something to do with the Super Turbo having fiberglass packing.
-
I think I'll look at the dynomax offerings becaue the super turbo is very small, a longer muffler body with all other elements being the same will usually sound better. It will be able to "muffle" more... duh
-
magnaflow is one of the best sounding mufflers for our car. as for the dynomax, i got a couple vids (which i will upload soon) but it did get pretty raspy. i recently got an aftermarket resonator put in and my exhaust sounds FANTASTIC. its exactly what i want. it has a nice subtle yet deep tone to it with out tha unwanted rattle. it makes the car sound more like a bimmer and less like a 4banger. i finally got the tone i want, but i am still looking forward to a magnaflow in the future
- vid clips soon to come
-
sweet put them on youtube
-
Which magnaflow muffler is the best specifically? I was looking at one that looked very close to stock at the muffler shop.. Could probably still use the stock mounts with it,, BUT if it sounds like crap, and someone knows which one does sound, like AL said, more like a bimmer and less like a 4banger, that's what I'm after!!
-
finally... (sorry it took so long)
got a short vid of my old exhaust.. dynomax muffler with stock cat and no resonator
(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b65/ghettoblaze/th_MVI_1153.jpg) (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b65/ghettoblaze/?action=view¤t=MVI_1153.flv)
that doesnt sound too bad but i got tired of that raspy high pitched sound..
i had a resonator put on and now my exhaust is actually LOUDER but juss deeper and more subtle. i actually set off quite a bit of car alarms now with the resonator put on.. heres a clip
(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b65/ghettoblaze/th_MVI_1154.jpg) (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b65/ghettoblaze/?action=view¤t=MVI_1154.flv)
that last clip was right after i got it put on.. its been broken in a bit more and sounds cleaner.. hopefully i can get more vids up soon..

Here's a clip of mine.
Whoa - I bet the neighbors hate you :p
After listening to all the soundclips on this site, I think I'll be going the route of Magnaflow. AL Greenery, thanks for the clips of the Dynomax. There's a bit of a raspy, tinny sound to that muffler which I don't hear on the magnaflow clips - definitely don't want to have that.

wow old thread. actually the second clip is of my exhaust with a brand new resonator. sounds much cleaner now without any rasp/tinny sound. but i would like to upgrade to magnaflow as well. either way KEEP the resonator!

you got a problem with 17-year-old-punks? hahaha kiddin. Hey I'll tell you guys what I've been searching around and have only found some super expensive kits and mufflers alone (don't really know how to replace just the muffler) So I've cut out the cat  and got it replaced with a mini muffler, gives it an ok sound but I'm looking for something low and rumble like. Coming from having a 1972 Monte Carlo with Summit Performance Dual Exhaust pipes, outfitting this guy with some low rumble? ...I dunno.
-
About the closest thing I have found is the magnaflow 11265. Theres a thread here somewhere (search "magnaflow exhaust") with a couple of vids from me and Alpine. A rumble will be difficult to get without cams or an LTW flywheel, but this exhaust has some nice overrun crackling on heel-toe downshifts ;).
-
I've got a magnaflow and the stock cat and resonator. I like the sound. Deep (for a 4 cylinder) and not tinny or raspy or too loud.
My muffler shop just cut off the old muffler after the final bend and welded on the Magnaflow and a double walled stainless tip.
Looks and sounds great for $175.
What's a Supersprint? about $600? How much better could it sound? 3 1/2 times better? I don't think so.
Oh, and I drive a cabrio, so if it's not too loud with no top, its going to be fine with a tintop.
