Title: M42club decal samples
Post by: stevohill on April 02, 2006, 11:13:46 PM
Well I had my friend make up a couple samples of what our decals could look like. All I need is everyone's approval, any other suggestions, and we can go from there. Keep in mind, this is only a sample, he has many other colors that can be used.  Here's an image of what they look like in red, white, and black.

Is it "legal" to use the roundel? Big companies are very "funny" over using registered trademarks, logos and that kind of stuff. I don't know if the same applies to stickers as well. Perhaps someone else could confirm? Wouldn't want a geniune effort like this to go to waste y'know :D

How big are they? Also like e9nine mentioned we may have to omit the roundel.

Hmmm...personally I don't like the font. Also the proportions are kind of...I donno. I'd say italicize it, use a more aggressive font, and place a small graphic in front of the text. I was thinking like a checker flag that fades in from the left. Also, placing the roundel in front of the text, like in the website's logo, but smaller, would be coole. Sorry. I don't mean to be so critical, just sharing ideas and my subjective opinion. I'll make some examples of my ideas soon.

They are roughly 9"x2" so not incredibly big, and like a said, I'm open to suggestions and these were just a test run, also anything too complex will just be to too much effort to mass produce, thats why we were trying to keep it simple. So keep the suggestions coming, and I agree they look pretty plain. However, I've seen many different clubs use the roundel in various spots of a sticker, and I doubt it's really any type of infringement. Just consider the fact that we're using the roundel w/bmw in it on our site without licensing :)

I'm w/ grippy, the font could be changed. I like comic sans and jester, but just me, their kinda more creative and informal kind of deal.

I like Febi's second better than the first.  I also like the encircling of the propeller in Stevo's offering, but perhaps with a reduced line weight.  I really just prefer the logo at the top of the page.   What if the roundel had "E30" around the top, in place of "BMW", then I don't think we would be treading on anyone's copywrite.

The only problem with having lettering in the roundel, is with something that small it's hard to get those letters to come out right.  Febi, let me know what fonts those are that you used, and I can have a few more samples printed up. So do we want the roundel w/or w/out the outer circle?

personaly i think the roundel should be a little smaller then the rest of the font as its supposed to be a "." is it not? and i llike the idea with the outer circle in the second font.

How about omit the roundel and go with an actual dot.
Then find a BMW emblem/sticker we can purchase seperately to place in front of the text.

This makes it look more appropriate and would emulate the logo up top much better without having BMW come down on us.

Regardless, if I get one of these, I will mod it so I can do that.

Also, while I doubt BMW would crack down on us at the moment as we are small, they could later (probably sooner than you think, trust me on that), having a setup that will never be an issue is the way to go. Get big enough and they will notice. Then we are stuck changing the design.

I prefer #3 as well with a dot instead of the roundel and a smaller space between it and the com. What do you guys think about increasing the font size of M42, in other words making it slightly larger than the rest of the decal?

Title: Dummy!
Post by: D. Clay on April 05, 2006, 02:08:26 PM
The crash test dummy thing is a shape that can be oriented accurately in 3D computer modeling. It is aligned to the three axis of CD computer space  The BMW roundel is a stylized airplane propeller referring to the companies origin as an aircraft manufacturer until after WWII when they were prohibited from doing military/aircraft production. I'm for #4 or the first of the second group of examples. I would like to see the M a little to the left and the outlined dummy dot on the baseline.

How much would a sticker with the forum M42CLUB.COM cost with the same colors (using 3)?  That woul dbe MY choice.

I am a fan of #3.  To be honest, I like it with the BMW roundel (minus the BMW), but alas, even though clubs all over have used it without license, I like the idea of us staying legit in all respects.  #3 +1.

Okay, first of all...  I love the idea!  Yes, let's get some M42Club decals made.  But, I would rather get a small round colorful window decal than a big bumper sticker sized vinyl sticker.  I love the script, but I agree with asubimer, that I think it will stand out too much.  You know, like the guys driving Accords with the "Powered by Honda" on it.  I think we can make it smaller and intergrate it into a little window decal.

Let's make something small and tastefull.  The E30 M3 SIG (stands for E30 M3 "Special Interest Group") made one that is very nice, round, and about the same size as the BMWCCA window decal.

Most people put them in thier rear 3/4 window and it doesn't take up much room.  Looks nice.  I'll post a picture of it later tonight when I get home for discussion.  In the grand scheme of things, it won't be much more expensive.

I bought a few of the e30tech ones a while back and decided not to use them.  I think one is on my toolbox or something though.  Just too big and tacky for the car.

I love the idea so far, just not this particular style.  Just my $0.02.  Anyone else think it should be a small inside window decal?  I think this is a first class web forum, so let's carry that out and make our decals look 1st class too!!!

Actually, I just found it.  See pic below.  Really looks classy!  I like this size and placement.  I'm sure the graphic arts talents of the group can up with something similar but unique to the M42.

I agree with Grippy on the script.  I like it!  What text script are you using?  Is this something standard in MS Word, or are you using some other sort of graphic arts program?

I'd like to play around and make a design.  I actually like one person's suggestion of using the colored script like at the top of this forum page.  I think a little picture of a 318is would be cool too...  Somone on this forum (maybe it's another) has a side view simple line drawing (looks almost like CAD) of a 318is.  That would be cool on the top, with the site logo/script on the bottom.  3 color, black, grey and blue shouldn't be too spendy.

I agree with SteetSpec_iS...  our club forum colored script looks great!  Of course, we would have to take out the roundel.

Maybe someone here can put a "demo design" idea like this together?  Anyone, anyone...  Buhueler, Buehler...

I think this layout in a 3-color inside glass decal would be great.  rectangle decal would probably be best.  Sorry to the guys with tint, but outside decals get faded, dirty, scrape off, etc.  For this reason I strongly suggest an inside window decal.  Sorry, but just one of the (many) unfortunate problems with window tint.

im just jumping on this thread but i say go all caps with a nice hard, bold simple font and the roundel is a toss up...i know u have to have at a number of percentage of a difference to use a logo that resembles another logo, this could work cuz it doesn't say bmw, the colors are different and its missing that upper line.  But we could check on that.

to the guy from Mesa, AZ is that u that i see all the time in mira mesa...i drive the faded red e30 with my company logo on the back...u and the other local San Diego peeps should roll out tonight to Fusion Cafe in Clairmont and chill with us...i posted a link in this forum somewhere if u didn't know about it. but Boris told me he invited u already.  hope to see u guys there.

another version of this will say SoCalE30s for us local San Diego heads, we have been averaging 6-8 e30s at a local SoCalEuro meet and last night we had a total of 10 show up and out of those 10, 4 of us were M42 heads.  I know M42CLUB.COM were looking for stickers, so wat do u guys think?

I think the forum logo minus the Roundel would be the way to go.  It's tasteful and understated.  There's really no need for the Roundel, since there's already a few of those on the car, and "M42" would only have meaning to those who know what it is.

Just my 2 cents.

Here are some of my ideas as I do like the top logo. It's very nice and clean just the way I like things and very much represents they way an E30 looks. Nothing flashy. Clean and mean.

I will still try to make the logos hi resolution. I also know someone who's dad own a print shop so if you guys like any of them Ill try to see if he can improve them on his PC and see what he charges and how they will come out.

tell me how you like them. Oh, I am a fan of putting the sticker on the little side window.
                        _____
                  ___/___I:) \__.
                / (O) ____ (O) _/       the one with the smiley.

just a nice little sticker there would be nice. I am planning to keep my e30 clean.

I'm personally not a fan of the motorsport colors on a non ///M car.

#3 works. Have we reached a consensus on the colors to be used or are we leaving it as is?
