Title: Approaching 200k maintenance suggestions
Post by: mgold on April 01, 2007, 02:26:06 PM
So my cabrio is approaching the 200k mark and was looking for suggestions of maintenance items I should perform.  Engine oil, tranny and diff fluids are fresh as are the NGK plugs.  So far I have the following on my list:

* Coolant flush/hose & thermostat replacement (other than 1 hose, I believe all are original)
* new plug wires (all are original)
* valve cover gasket (current one is not too old, but is leaking into the plugs... possibly due to a couple of stripped bolts)
* steering column guibo (original, and some some steering rattle)
* power steering hoses (original and leaky)
* timing chain tensioner (I don't know if its been changed or not)
* engine mounts (original)
* bleed brake/clutch lines (its been a while)

Possible items I may have to address as well:

* clutch (I have at least 120k on the current clutch, I'll have to measure the thickness)
* aux fan switch or resistor (I don't think my aux fan is kicking on its high speed when idling in the heat with the AC on)

You bring up a good question.  Should we combine all of the 'expected" mx items based on mileage and catalog them?

off the top of my noggin;

- fuel pump / filter (150k or so)
- o2 sensor (25k miles?)
- air filter (new or clean)
- ps reservoir (150k miles?)
- belts
- diff and tranny fluid (80-100k miles?)
- headlamp bulbs; just 'cause they go on, doesn't mean they are 100% effective

I don't have my owners manual handy but there are some service intervals...

This has the potential to be a great thread.

Too many of us (well, me anyway) get lost in the mod / upgrade, fix-when-its-rattling-apart mode and forget the basics.

I think you are wasting dollars for non maintenance items. Fix only things that need to be fixed imo. If it makes you feel any better, carry an extra fuel pump with you in the trunk. Worth the headaches/value of a tow.

"If it ain't broke..."

as for my car:
fuel pump= original, filter=1 year old
O2 sensor= 6 or 7 years (I wonder if this is affecting my gas mileage)
air filter= K&N, cleaned 6 months ago
ps reservoir= flushed 6 months ago, but original reservoir (these break?)
belts=6 months ago
diff & tranny fluid=6 months ago
headlight bulbs= not sure, probably a year or so ago replaced low beams
