Title: Gaskets!
Post by: jmeyer318is on March 27, 2007, 12:31:22 PM
I am planning on replacing the lower oil pan gasket and the valve cover gaskets soon and I am trying to put together a list of everything that I'll be needing.  Here is my list so far:
1. oil pan gasket
2. valve cover gasket
3. spark plug seal gaskets
4. silicone gasket sealant

Do I put the silicone gasket sealant on all of the gaskets?  Will I need to replace any of the bolts, or are they re-useable?  Should I use loc-tite or anything like that on the bolts when I replace them?  If so, what kind?  What is the tightening torque on the bolts?  I saw a value of 10Nm/89in-lb somewhere for the valve cover, will this work for the oil pan bolts too?

Sorry for all the questions.  I am doing this for the first time, and I want to make sure I get it right.

For the valve cover gasket, you may want to have a few extra bolts around just in case one is broken already or one breaks backing it out.  Otherwise, you should be cool.  You may want to check the rubber pieces that go on to the bolts.  If they are in good shape you can re-use them.  I just put on new ones because I was fixing a leak and I picked them up for $.40/ea.  I don't remember the torque specs to be honest, and I'm at work.  I'm pretty sure I got them out of the E36 Bentley manual.
