I know that the ticking from the m42 is a common problem but i can remember what it was that causes it. So what is it, how do i fix it and, is it expensive and long job. Also the ticking comes and gose inconsistantly if that helps at all. thanks any comments would be great.

When do you hear it, idle, certain rpms?
-
Well first i thought it was when it got hot but it dose it when its cold as well. And at any rpm. But if i listen hard it the tick speed fluctuates little bits could if maybe be the fan?
-
Is it load dependant, i.e. does it get worse when accelerating? Where does the noise seem to eminate from? What is your oil level? How loud is it? What does it sound like - think of something similar that would make the same noise.

The injectors are known to tick a bit, but they are never usually the tick people hear. I think it is just the hydraulic lifters, and while the ticking is usually harmless, making it go away is extremely hazardous to your wallet.

No there dosn't seem to be any relationship with the nosie except that its speed is relivant to the rpm. its coming from the cam cover so i thought it would be the lifters if it dose come to replacing them, what is the differance between the soilid and hydrolic lifters in terms of life and perforamce and, would it be a good choice to go for the lighter e36 lifters? thanks guys

Oh and theres not much to say about the tick it sounds like a tick, errr i did notice it ticks to the note of the exhorest. I mean iv got a loud car and can here the thumps from the motors exhorst and it seems to tick in conjunction with that. but thats all i can tell you. and yes there is oil in the car. thanks
