Title: Jet-Hot / Swain Tech Thermal Coatings?
Post by: bmwman91 on March 11, 2007, 06:18:10 PM
So, has anyone had their header / downpipe coated with anything like this?  I thought about it years ago, but never really looked too far into it.  Aside from looking nicer, the headers should last longer with this coating.  Anyone have opinions on which coating is a better investment?  I know Jet-Hot is like the biggest name in coatings, but I have also heard good things about Swain Tech.  Any input is appreciated!

I have mine Jet-Hot coated.  They will not last any longer than they already would have - they are already stainless, they last just fine. The primary advantage to Jet-Hot coating is that they reduce underhood temps. Not significantly, but it is noticeable. Perhaps not so much on these engines, but on my '96 Impala SS it made an appreciable difference.

Looks nice, though!

Good to know!  I have to wonder if this helps exhaust gas scavenging at all.  Doubtful, but who knows.  How much did this cost you?
Title: Heat wrap

I used heat wrap on my header and it did a great job of reducing under-hood temperature.

yes, but this will also significantly reduce the life of your header.

Just remember that certain types of stainless steel have better heat retention properties compared to mild steel, another reason why coatings aren't necessarily needed but still can be beneficial.
