Title: Engine Differences
Post by: Montius on March 02, 2007, 10:50:21 AM
Hi All, I am new to the M42 club, and I have a few questions for you M42 Gurus.

I have a 95 318ti and I have an opportunity to pick up a complete engine from a 91 318.  My question is, what are the differences in the blocks?  Will all the accessories from the 95 bolt up (Alt, power steering), is there anything else I need to know before I pick this engine up?  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Cris

I don't know about the '95, but I know that the '93 m42 is different from the e30 m42 in several ways.  The oil pan and intake manifold are different, you'll need to swap yours across.  I'm also told the '93 has knock sensors so I assume the '95 does as well. The e30 does not, so you'll want to use your wiring harness and figure out where the knock sensors are and swap them across too.    Good luck, Noel

the M44 (the motor in you ti) has 2 serpintine belts, the M42 (91 318) has 3 v-belts. the accesories will not bolt up because they have a different pulley design. i think you might be able to swap your crank pulley over from the M44 but im not sure.
