Title: Advancing the Intake cam??
Post by: JOEBMW on February 25, 2007, 10:07:08 AM
Hey guys,

I have heard that advancing the intake cam ~5 degress does wonders to the m42s.  Does anyone here have it done?  How much better does it feel?

Any input would be cool, pros vs. cons.

thanks
Joe

It helps for low revs, better torque, but you will loose trust on high revs..

what do you mean lose trust? i think you are talking about retarding the cam timing, not advancing...

trust - was my mistake, there should be power :)

I mean advancing, you will get better torque on low revs and worse on high revs..

i have done both, retarding, and advancing....just to play around. i only went a few degrees both ways. i dont recomend doing it. if you track to car i geuss it would be nice to advance it since your always in the upper range of the rpm range. but for DD it sucks. the engineers at bmw spent lots of time deciding where the best all around power/reliabilty would be (cam timing wise), they did a good job. so i wouldnt change it, just my 2 cents.

p.s. when i advanced it the upper end didnt have a HUGE advantage but i did notice it, wasnt worth it because i lost alot of low end.

How many degress did you advance it?

hard to tell, no more than the notch in the cam gear allowed, maybe about 3-4 degrees, i didnt measure it, just eye-balled it.

Try it. IF you don't like it set it back. It's a very simple process and doesn't take much time. If someone has access to a dyno, let's see how this SHIFTS the powerband?

I almost did this last year when I had my car dynoed but I was late, tired and just didn't have the resources to perform such runs.

Don't forget you are SHIFTING your powerband when you advance your intake cam. I have done this process in the past. I just have no motivation to repeat it as of yet :D

What about the exhaust cam? Does that do anything for you? What if you did it in tune with the intake cam?

Ok, i see.  Do you think that there is risk of the valves hitting the pistons?

I believe that if the cam is within the notch of the cam gear it should be ok:confused:

Who knows how to do this?

it shouldnt be a risk as long as you do not go beyond 5 degrees or so.
