Some pics from the Oct. BMWCCA final auto-x. My buddy co-driving - me in the front happy he got tail happy so he didn't increase the gap in times. He's a master at driving and beat me in my own car by a very very narrow margin. My aim is to trophy again this year. We are very close with regards to time each time regardless of which car he's in.

My buddy in an Elise. We are probably all wondering how possible? Well - it's all about the relationship between the driver and the car. I seem to be "better matched with what I have"

Awesome pics,
How stiff is the back ?

that was with Konis set a few notches away from full soft and 650 springs with the rear as low as possible. I was messing around with the settings. Next month I'll be at a test and tune messing with 650 and 800 # rear rates with medium and medium hard rebound adjustments in the rear without the car as low.
-
those are awesome pics. Wish I had some coilovers on my m42 too... btw I love those wheels.
-
Sweet pics! I am guessing you have an iS with an LSD out there in the back. How well can the M42 carry out a drift?
-
splooge...
-
Believe it or not - I raced all last season and did HPDEs with an open 4.10 :D
I recently put in a 4.10 LSD when I did my s.frame, t.arm bushings
My moto has been: Work with what you have. When you put that behind you - it makes you a better driver - you drive the car as it is and look to improve areas to compensate for the lack of whichever equipment you have. Typically it's all about the line you will drive and your braking and throttle habits. You can still get an open LSD car to get waggy with the tail, trail brake etc.
Glad you guys enjoy the pics!

Amen. When you get good enough to drive a stockish 318is fast, you can drive just about any car fast.

I hear ya! I did my HPDE last year with an open diff, I just want an LSD so I can get tail happy some more and have some fun.

The top drift pic is awsome. With the 4.10 lsd you can do better drifts. I was putting 3 corner drifts together on kuhmo v710 tires last year auto-xing. So this year im going to falkens rt615's. I'll be having alot of fun.

Hah...I have 2 sets of take off R-comps to try in auto-x, I'll def. be asking a question or two of you come March when we have our test-n-tune
-
What up Rik?!
Fuken love ya work bro. I still want Hi-Res of the 3 wheelin sig.
-
It looks like you have more suspension work done. Im running koni sports with stock springs and swaybars. I think my rear was at full stiffness on the koni's. I think the r comps are the better way to go, just lacking the funds. They do awsome on blacktop and concrete. I still running in G stock.

Yes diff. set up indeed. I am running Koni SAs as well with GC semi coilovers, no rear swaybar. I have NEVER been man enough to run full stiffness for the Koni SAs due to my higher spring rates. Last year I was on 600/650 this year I am back on 600/800 for testing purposes at present. I await our test-n-tune session in March oh-so-eagerly.
How do you fare in g-stock? Who are your competitors mainly. I think a lot of the new FWD cars such as the VW 1.8Ts etc are in G.Stock right?
-
Last year I won G stock, and I had one 2nd place, one 3rd place, and the rest of the events I won my class. I also finished 2nd in soloist points against a C stock miata and a F stock firebird. I was very happy. The cars that normally ran in my class was 2 svt focus and a Sentra SER the early 90's body. I have not compeated against the mini s. It should be a good experance to run on street tires again. Our last event it was cold out and I had my right rear tire started pealing the tread off. So I had to put the street tires back on with the car at full still and the rear of the car was very very tail happy. So I should be able to put together a good drift run. A good buddy has a 350z and was impressed I could keep my drifts to gether.

This year I intend to use my other e30 325i in STS as the 318iS mod's put it in SM (e30m3 5 lug etc) as our SCCA line up around here is packed with some top skilled drivers paired with some nicely set up cars. If possible - I'll run it and the test-n-tune with the 318iS vs the 325i to see if there's actually a difference. I intend to run mainly for seat time but don't like to deal with too much of a gap with equipment and talent so I might just run time only if I don't use the 325i.
-
it looks like you have some decent sized lots. Most of our lots we run on are small. But it's fun no matter what. Good Luck this year. I'll try to keep informed on how i'm doing.

Hows your car running this year? I finally got mine to handle alot better. I have done some crazy drifts this year, we had 4 cones about 10 feet a part in a square you had to go around and drifted the car all the way around.
-
I am using my m20 this season for auto-x in Class C with the BMWCCA and it's holding it's own as usual.
E30s can be made to drift controllably (even though it's not the fastest way around) with the right approach and you don't kick the clutch or use the e-brake either.
-
The car naturally wants to come around. It's fun to drive until you need to get serious about your times.

Have you had someone co-drive or have you driven someone elses car at the same auto-x? Usually it's sometimes the style of driving that makes the car behave that way.
My slowest auto-x this season was when I was on my worn Azenis and the car just wouldn't stick no matter what. It was the most entertaining auto-x for sure and there was a combination of steering movements and throttle application which effortlessly hung the rear out.
However - my times were the worst ever and I was 2nd or so. I am usually a few good seconds ahead of the competition in my class (yet another reason why I will co-drive with my buddy for the rest of the season) but the whole notion of sliding around without braking and mainiting some interesting transitions as not being fast is totally true
You guys are making me want to drive a stock 318iS or 318iS with an LSD, Koni SAs and 15" wheels/tires - I wonder how it would feel.
-
Most of the people that get behind the wheel have about the same issues. The last event the everyones car was tailing out due to the course layout. Its better suited for the brushed concrete. A couple events ago it ran really good into the long sweeper and started to tail out with more speed.

Hah - nice to observe consistency at least with all the others then. What's the site where you guys have your times posted?
