Title: asubimmer's gt28r turbo thread [aborted :( ]
Post by: asubimmer on February 04, 2007, 03:17:06 PM
Well I have spent a LOT more time planning etc. The new plan is based around a gt28r that will be here shortly. I have the manifold and I still need to weld in the port for the external wastegate. This setup will be 10psi tuned w/ MS1 v3.0. I am thinkin of tryin out NGK's new wideband o2 sensor b/c I lose their products and I like its options and display. I have already installed the COP and it is running great.

I am debating between the 3.73 and 4.10lsd's. I currently have a open 4.10 diff.

I am going to be running 2.5" IC pipes as well as 2.5" exhaust. The exhaust will be straight piped to a hooker glasspack unless I decide its too loud. I am running the "turbo" exhaust right now and it sounds great but I think its too loud for the long run. But we'll see how much the turbo quiets it down.

3,73
it will have so much power your 1st will be useless,
the 3,73 will at least minimize that

The Ebay kit will be available in about 25days so I´m counting down to buy it for the M42.

What changes did you notice with the COP ?

VS motor rules. and he is a Norwegen. and that m5 is not a kit. your gt2860r is in the 250 to 300 hp range.

how much did that gt28r run you? and are you going too be using a thicker metal head gasket or running stock gasket with stock compression and internals?

I am betting on stock thickness head gasket...one of the drawbacks of a timing CHAIN.

couldnt the tensioner take it into account? because there is slack? maybe you modify the tensioner? im just curious because i know they sell them here http://vacmotorsports.com/cgi-bin/view_item.pl?item_id=470 (http://vacmotorsports.com/cgi-bin/view_item.pl?item_id=470)

The GT28R is a perfect turbo for our 1.8L engines. It is easily capable of over 300whp without compressor wheel/housing modifications. The VW 1.8T community is all about this turbo because it gets to full boost very early. Good choice.

Did you install the Megasquirt already? If you did, I'm curious how you set it up.

Do you think the M42's going to be okay without knock sensors though?

yeah the lack of knock sensors is going to be ok.  I ordered the MS and its on the way.  I have the turbo and it looks incredible.  I will get some pics in the tommorro for you guys.  I will more than likely be using the stock head gasket for now, I just want to see how it holds up ;)

Keep things posted,
I´d be interested to see how a stock gasket holds up

not yet but it looks like its going to fit.  But I may run it bottom mount.

I'm gonna see which I like better and go from there.  When I get some time I'll put it on and see how it all fits.

Well the MS is on the way and I have decided to pick up the AEM EBC (http://www.aempower.com/ViewCategory.aspx?CategoryID=68).

The manifold will be done on March 3rd. I'm not sure if anyone has tried yet but I think I'm going to try and use a m20 TB w/ a mustang TPS for the MS. I am doing all I can to have this on before Korman's Open House on March 17th. Time is hard to come by w/ a job and college but I'm hoping for the best!

thanks and good luck with your project.

a little update...

I've spent the day workin on the car. I have the whole exhaust off as well as the front sway bar. For those who don't know taking off the stock manifold is a PITA! I bolted up the Tubo manifold and its a no go on bottom mount as the compressor side of the turbo would hit the subframe. The top mount looks nicer than I thought it would but the adapter to get the turbo where I want it is looking to be a pain as well.

I am heading off for the beach in the morning but I will be back about thurs or so and will be pickin this back up. Also I finished building the MS kit and I am about to start installing it.

the new e30 m3 antenna ;)

yep as I figured.  I knew that it would if I used it as a top mount but I was hoping that it would work for a bottom mount :(

My o2 sensor was toast so I just ordered the AEM wideband.  It'll be here when I am back from the beach.

I was hoping to have the turbo on for the Korman Open House the 17th but that obv isn't going to happen due to the fun setbacks that always happen.  I am hopefully going to finish up the manifold while I am at Korman fri and sat this week so that I can put it on up in boone.

Any updates?  Also, do you go to ASU right now?  Obviously your name is asubimmer but the location being NC is throwing me off :D  I'm maybe looking to turbo my E30 this summer, I found this kit on ebay and I just posted a thread on the BF forced induction section to get opinions on it:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=018&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=280097205482&rd=1,1

It looks like a pretty good starting point, the only thing I need to figure out is what engine management system(s) to go with.  I've seen a few guys running Mega Squirt and MSD for spark, the SMT-6, Tec3's, etc so I need to keep researching that.  I also need to call around and see if there any shops that can help with tuning.

Let me know how the Mega Squirt system is because as of now that is up there on my list.  Also, what are you running for ignition?  You may have mentioned it but I skimmed the thread and might have missed it.  Hope everything is going somewhat alright!  DIY turbo kits always have a bundle of asspains as I'm sure you know..

yeah I go to appalachian state in NC.  That kit looks pretty good too.  The only thing is he doesn't say what any of the brands are on the components etc.  I am tryin to figure out how to get MS to work w/ my COP conversion or just multiple coils in general.

Tor Arne Kaasen I took a pic for you but my computer monitor went out so I can't get anything on my comp for the time being.  Thats the reason I've been of the forums the past few days.  So I won't be on too much untill the new one comes in :(

for the ms problem look up msns edis. electronic distributorless ignition. there are threads on how to modify the system to run on the m42 with dual trigger wheels and such. if you have any questions lemme know, i brushed up on it pretty good before boot camp.

well over spring break my m42 managed to eat 3 piston rings.  I wasn't plannin on having to rebuild so soon, so inlight of everything the m42 turbo project has been aborted and all the turbo stuff is FS.  I already sold the MS and AEM wideband.  I really really wanted to turbo the m42 but I don't have the time to have the car down long enough for the rebuild.  As far as I can tell w/out taking the head and block to a shop they look like they are flat w/out cracks if anyone needs them.  I'll have them checked before I sell them though.

Sorry that it didn't happen guys...

thats life I guess

It was the biggest one that was available for the skyline w/ the rb20det.  This was off a GTS-T Type M Skyline.  It had 10k miles on it when it was removed.  Obv, its a dual bb w/ ceramic blades which makes this thing spin REALLY well.  It doesn't have shaft play either.  I must say this is the nicest used turbo I've seen ;)

thanks Sam.  I'm really sad that this turbo m42 isn't going to happen for me.  lol I've spent a TON of time and $ in this and now I'm going another route.  I'm going home tommorro and hopefully will have the car back up and running the 3/4th.  Cross your fingers lol.
