Title: m42 stroker getting new cams
Post by: jerseytim on April 01, 2020, 04:01:00 PM
This engine has had a hard life for the last 4 years. it has done a lot af mileage, never let me down and always been a joy to drive. i have booked it in for new higher revving camshafts, a full refresh and an oil cooler adaptor. it currently revs to 7500 but now going 8000. these engines are very underrated and i am surprised more people don't use them. https://youtu.be/jLc4c7XbvTg

Hey, i saw your channel on youtube already, you got an awesome engine there. Would you mind tell me your current cams, or specs? I want to do a similar approach, but im limited to the e30 original intake manifold so i think i wont go with 8000 rpm and and very spikey cams.

Cheers

the cams are standard reprofiled cams that were designed by shrigley engineering so i have no idea what profile they are, they were made for torque more than revs as i used to run a standard 328i gearbox and needed the torque to make up for the long gear changes even with the 4.4 diff. The problem was the hydraulic lifters had to be replaced with shimmed buckets which got expensive. The standard intake is supposed to be very good, my itbs are probably too big for the engine but they make all the right noises.
If you speak to Andy at shrigley engineering he knows what he is taking about and could probably profile some cams to what you want

Pretty cool.
Im running the 1.9 bottom with M42 head, 256° Schrick Cams and a fully ported intake. The car was measured with 177hp back in the day, but i think its more like 170-165. I have a e36 gearbox with a 188 Diff, 5.44 and 75% lock. Its really really short, i dont use the 1rst gear at all and im on the limiter at 160kmh. Which is just fine on most rallys.

Tell me how you like the engine with the new cams. Im thinking the catcams 1301751 could be suitable for me.
