I'm forever tired of seeing neat retro or classic interiors ruined by a ridiculous looking deck. Especially ones that completely clash with the theme of the lights of the interior.
Back when I had my old Subaru Legacy--which only had a tape deck. I searched for a high quality deck which would match. I wanted it to look classic, good, and be of high quality. The deck that I found which perfectly matched was the Nakamichi decks.

Check them out, and if anyone else has good recommendations for excellent classic looking decks which match the interior of the E30 well, please tell us!

I know I'm responding to a really old thread, but I need to replace my OEM E30 deck, and the Nakamichi is by far my top choice. The concerns are 1. availability and 2. no USB connection, which would be nice.
Are there any new decks that have been released recently that are appropriate for an E30? Also, I can't find any shops that distribute Nakamichi stereos here in Canada.

Amazon.com has the CD300 for $129. It has a choice of two colors for the display one of which is amber. There are a lot of CD/MP3 players with selectable colors for the display. CD400 is $400 if you find one to buy.
-
I searched for one for months. Only found ridiculously exorbitant pricing. Gave up the search for Nakamichi and bought a Clarion DXZ-7645MP with 128 different color display hues.
-
Through ebay I found a local stereo shop that's auctioning off a CD-400 unit, and they claim they have a few left to auction as well. I'll have to keep track of that to see realistically how high it may go. However, thanks very much for the Amazon link, that may be the way to go!

That is a very nice deck . I have an older clarion dxz but still has the 128 colors and the flip face . very nice and reasonably priced .
-
Ooops, actually it's a CD-500 and it's up to $200 now.
-
Dang, I like that. Looks high-quality and not super flashy like all of the other aftermarket decks out there.
-
$200 for a CD500 is a BARGAIN!
-
I've got a Sony and it doesn't clash with the interior at all.

Perhaps, but is it really worth double the price of the 300???
-
I've found a source for Nakamichi stereos in Toronto so I'm pretty happy about that! They are expecting a shipment of CD-300's which are on sale for about one week for Boxing Day. Whatever doesn't sell will be going on ebay. If anybody's interested, either PM me or look out on ebay in the next few weeks!

Thought I'd post a picture of the headunit I have. I don't think it clashes that much and is a very nice unit.

the cd deck from the e36 will probably fit too and keep the original feel. but twice the price of an aftermarket i agree. i have a sony CDXGT220. it doesnt clash too much either, actually its very very similar to the one jpod999 has
-
I agree with the distaste for head units that look garish. Pretty much anything silver falls in that category IMHO.
I had a Sony explod in an older car that looked really nice. Similar to the one above. I liked it so much I put a matching one in my wife's audi. It looked nearly factory.
My current E30 has a Blaupunkt Miami Beach. There is enough red with the white and blue that it ties to the amber dash lighting well. Plus being German it seems appropriate.
The car is hibernating for the winter or I'd take a photo. I also bought a set of sony speakers that fit in the footwell and had seperate tweeters that I cut and pasted into the factory housing. The sound improvement is amazing and you'd never know they were swapped out. While I like most mods to be noticable. I don't like non factory speaker grilles pasted all over either. Especially the garish ones you get nowadays. What happened to black mesh?
-
What happened to black mesh?
You can't be a gangsta if you have normal stuff. ;)
I need new speakers so badly. Paper cone ftl.
-
What happened to black mesh?
you can buy replacement standard 5 1/4 inches mesh covers from ebay

Sadly the nakamichi's are rediculously expensive personally. I've always been a fan of having it work perfectly before the looks, so I've never cared about if it matches or not. That being said, I've got a kenwood, its about 5 years old, but works great and has survived 2 e30's haha.
My speakers are long gone... I've got some kappa perfect's sitting in my room waiting to go in the e30 soon as I'm done w/ the motor work.
-
I ended up picking up a Nak CD-300 for $99, so I'm really happy about that! The store I got it from should still have some more in stock. These are refurbished units, and they look fantastic. The $99 price was for Boxing Week though, so likely it would be higher now. I'll have the unit installed in a couple of months when my E30 comes out of hibernation.

Here's a pic of mine...the angle is a bit crappy but you can see it :)
Its an Alpine CDA 7894 with MP3/CD/XM compatibility.

Another one for Alpine, i got the 7995 pre-amp and i really really love its sound Q,
it may look a bit out of context with the lights on, but once the LCD is out (it has a black-out option) if fit in quite nice...
before i had a kenwood X869 that looked awful in the surroundings of the E30, and before the kenwood i had a Sony ES7050 that looked like stock ;) but did not read MP3.
Ron.
BTW - i love the Nakamichi CD line, i just dig more for remote and MP3-
-
Dude, I have a CDM-7874 that looks just like yours. CD player, woofer capability, no MP#, but it has an aux in that I installed and that makes up for it all. The only problem is that the backlighting is green :(
-
here's mine
since the sunroof angle is trendy:

Dude!! You have heated seats! I've never seen those on an M42 car in the States, was that an option in Canada?

Hehe I will have heated seats soon. Bought the complete set from an E30 M3...includes the top and bottom elements, harness's and switches :)
-
i do have heated seats but no fan blower! i'm pretty sure it came as an option included with the leather sport seats. not too sure but its a common option on canadian cars.
my driver side seat doesnt heat, it used to when i bought the car. does anyone know how to fix. the fuses seems to be intact and the passenger side works.
-
Ah yes, heated seats! That's the one feature my E30 doesn't have, but my previous one did and I loved them!
-
Any idea if it is possible to retrofit the systems or use something from a different car?
As for repair-check the wiring to the switches and under the seats. Apparently the switches can get dirty or loose easily, and it is easy to spill drinks and stuff on them.
-

I think all the cabrios had them. My 318ic did until I took them out for leather unheated sport seats. It still has the switches though. I haven't figured out a way to fill the holes.

Can't beat these - Blaupunkt Freestyler. Not only were they (and still are) the OEM for BMW but they look great in E30's as they are all dark matt black with red night illumination which blends well with the orange of the E30 dash lights.
AND they have full europe-wide satnav built in! No crappy stuck to the dash nonsense or pimp flip up screens. jUst discreet style.
