I always thought our rear windshield/decklid/taillight design always looked volvo-ish during that era....

personal peeve of mine - the diving boards were always more "aggressive" looking to me....vs the plastic bumpers which looked more modern

Take a look at the new Accord and BMW 3 Series. On the front, only the grilles are different. The overall shape is getting similar due to aerodynamics. Only the details are different.

One of the things I like about the E30's looks is that it's one of the last low rear deck lid models. I had a 1980 240GL Volvo once that I nicknamed "Stodgy".
1 : having a rich filling quality  : HEAVY (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/heavy)   <stodgy bread>
2 : moving in a slow plodding way especially as a result of physical bulkiness
3 : BORING (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/boring), DULL (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/dull)   stodgy Sunday boat trip  -- Edna Ferber>
4 : extremely old-fashioned  : HIDEBOUND (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/hidebound)   stodgy father  -- E. E. S. Montagu>
5 a : DRAB (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/drab) b : DOWDY (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/dowdy)

I dont see the simlarities to volvos personally. Nothing beats plastic bumps with full euro trim.

I've always been a sucker for plastic bumpers but you can't go wrong with euro bumpers and lower arches :)
