Title: engine swap few small issues
Post by: giorgakis14 on May 26, 2016, 11:23:40 AM
hey guys. i just completed a engine swap. i put at a e36 m42 into my e30 and i ran into a few small issues. first my idle is at 2k on start up and it stays up there untill i blip my throttle and then it drops to 900 second my temp gauge isnt reading anything. i ether hooked up the wrong harness to the sensor. if im correct the rear sensor on the head is for the gauge. i doubt i hooked up the wrong one but if thats not the case is the sensor different on the e36 then the e30? hence why it wont read any temp?

Hi, you have an E36 or E30 ECU ?
For the temp sensor you certainely have an electric probleme. I have an E36 temp sensor and it work. The only difference is the indicator position.
With E30 sensor, hot engine, the indicator shows 1/2 (12h). With E36 sensor it shows 1/4 (10h).
You can't inverse the two connectors because the first as two pins et the second only one.

I have the e30 ecu. So if I swap the sensor back to the e30 one it should be fine? Reading at 12?

Yes.
For your idle probleme try tu put some WD40 in the actuator or verify your accelerator sensor is good.
