I'm trying to start a freshly swapped m42 and I think my coil wiring might be wrong. Is there an easy way to tell which plug goes to which cylinder? We tried shortest to longest and it doesn't want to start.

This is for m44. But im pretty sure it will be the same. Scroll down a bit

Unfortunately the M42 is different. The geniuses at BMW decided to use identical wire colors for all four coil plugs on the M42.

Ah. Right. Fair enough... good luck.

For anyone who happens to stumble on this thread and has the same issue as me, here is the pinout so that you can do a continuity test on the wires to figure out which cylinder is which. Cylinders 1-4 are on pins 25, 52, 24, 51 respectively.
