Title: Bought used motor and found some issues
Post by: giorgakis14 on September 30, 2015, 11:53:35 PM
hey guys,
My e30 has a bad motor so i picked one up for 200 bucks. took the valve cover off everything looked good also did a leakdown test and all the cylinders are within 4% my only concern is when i removed the tstat cover and the water pump i found that the cylinder walls have a lot of rust in them. when you look where the water pump goes. is this a serious issue or can i just clean it out with some vinegar and go on my way with the engine swap? thanks for the help

Hi
I'd run it with a very dilute solution 5 % of vinegar for a couple of days, then check the rust. Once the rust is gone flush everything a lot and refil with grasshopper juice/water. U must get the vinegar out completely it will eat the engine if you don't. Can't stress that enough though.

Not going to cause major issues obviously a past owner didn't use coolant, grasshopper juice! But it will eventually cause problems with clogging things, radiator, thermostat etc.

Cheers Rohan
