hi;
i have original coolant temperature sensor of e36 replaced in my engine. but it doesn't work on my e30 cluster. why? this is a 2-pol sensor from VDO (12621747281).
the old sensor is broken while trying to remove to unplug the wire. this is the e30 sensor with 1-pol (12621710512). this worked on the e36 wire on my e30 cluster gauge.
i am puzzled? i think i should get a new e30=type sensor (1 pol) to work

Hi
The temp sensor on the radiator?
-
No. it's on the engine block. use the part # to check the diagram, you will see where it is.

I had all sorts of problems with my gauge/sensors when I first bought my e30 318is, turns out the previous owner had plugged temp sensor plug into the oil pressure sensor and vice versa. May not be any help to you mate but ya never know ;)

coolant sensor: e30 wiring uses 1-pol sensor, while e36 wiring uses 2-pol sensor. anyway, this is NOT important for engine management because it is only used to sell the water temp. gauge for the driver.

I have exactly same problem, has anybody a solution?

Did you put teflon tape around the sensor? If remove it it causes ground issues
