Crank sensor is a good possibility.
That's what my kids 318i was doing and I replaced it.
Pull and test it with an ohm meter? Should be around 550ohms

Ive found the problem crank sensor broken.

Glad you figured it out.
I went with a genuine bmw crank sensor as I read numerous issues with cheaper replacements.
