What kind of metal is the exhaust manifold? I'm assuming steel, but is it some kind of alloy or something? Can I bend it with heat? Maybe weld to it?

Not sure. My vote goes for some type of stainless alloy, as I've never seen much rust on it.

I'd agree with Dave here. Even the manifold on the car with close to 400k had some surface rust but was still rather solid.
Even the nuts came loose with little effort for head gasket swap.
