I had some trouble locating a good cylinder head for my 91.  I wound up installing a m44 head from a '98, that has been working out real well.  Of course, this will not help if you want to keep it original, but the m44's don't tend to crack as easy and was pretty strait forward to fit.

My local pic and pull has an 1995 318i early m44  that still has the head. The car was hit hard in the rear so I know it was a runner. I think heads are $50. I could pull it for you for a small fee, and ship it if its not too far...  I am in Reno Nevada.....Skid
