Title: Fresh rebuild REALLY noisy
Post by: Chodedub on August 22, 2014, 05:14:10 PM
So i bought a 91 318i rebuilt the motor this winter and am just getting to run it now. The head and rotating assembly were assembled by the machine shop that did the work. Upon start up i expected a loud motor as per oil having to get around the motor but it didn't quiet down after about 5 mins of run time. I'm nervous about running it any longer then i already have, i pulled the valve cover off and checked everything seems to be lubricating properly and no wearing that i can see. HELP!!!

Remember that the hydraulic lifters will probably need to bleed out the trapped air after all that time.  There might also be another problem, but I'm just saying that this could be the root of your concern.

Have fun!

Roughly how long should this bleeding process take?

If you replaced the timing chain tensioner the engine will be very noisy until the tensioner releases. Yor have to rev the engine quite high to build up enough oil pressure to release the tensioner. 4000 rpms if im not mistaken... It could be your problem. You could also remove the tensioner and see if it has indeed released... Skid

Here's a procedure for bleeding that should still be applicable:

If the timing chain tensioner is the problem I'd suggest releasing it before you put it back in, will be a little harder to thread in but you should be able to do it.
