Hello,my name is Alex and i'm from Romania.from eight months i have an 318is (few years ago i've had an 323i coupe 1985).
Not much to say about the car for now, about 200.000 miles on odometer and some rust problems amount other problems.for now i Have changed -mechanical part
-steering rack - with one from E36
-rear disk brakes and pads
-brake hoses
On the body:
-both doors
-frond hood
-left wing
-both bumpers
-doors sils(outer) + inner right door sill
-rear wings -inner arches+ outer arches
-sunroof
-front left housing strut+battery tray cut and put the part from another car.
-rear panel
pictures after the repairs - here https://imageshack.com/a/aqtq/1
pictures how the car was when i got it(i've takeen out the interior and everything else by my self)
-
and last 2 pictures.Engine was leaking oil everywhere changed some gaskets but still was leaking oil when it was pulled out from the car,as far as i know is the original motor but the head was damaged and changed with an M42 E36 head.something is wrong either with the speedo or the gearbox/differential because i could get up to 62 miles in the second gear, also acceleration was poor in first ans second gear .initial plans where to change the engine with a M20 stoker or M20 2.0 turbo.but for now i'm thinking to find out if a can get the M42 up to 130-140 WHP with some mild tuning.currently the car is at a paint shop waiting for his turn.
-
For now looks like this. For the engine i'm planing to try to remain on N/A side and the goal is 160-170 hp at the crank(that is about 140-150whp i guess). So the plan will be:
-crankshaft from M44?M47? i live in Europe so M47 are preaty easy to get.
-high compresion pistons?i've understand that pistons from M3 E36 will work?
-ecu tunning
-headers
-if i found a good price perhaps ITB
Any sugesstions?do i need to make timing adjustments for the things above?can i get close to the target power with above mods?
-
Hi
Have you cut out all the rusty steel and replaced it?
If you have, nice work!
What are the plans for the car?
Cheers
-
Hello, not by myself i hired someone to do all the work,he changed:
I'm trying to keep the car stock on exterior ,i will get some eibach/h&r spring and perhaps some swaybars.it will be a car for weekend and cruising ,but i will like to get it as close as pisibile in terms of performance as a 325i.
-
almost ready, should be ready this week.unfortunately i don't know if the M42 will remain.still looking at all options for now M20 is ahead.
-
few updates, all suspension bushes has been revised,90% of electrical instalation is ready(only electrical windows and AC remain ) i've got an used Koni suspension that will be on the car.next is the engine. and yes the paint used for sway bar is a bit rude, but it should it in good condition.
-
Headlights test :)
-
so,the engine is pulled out from the car and for now i have:
-all gaskets except for head gasket
-timing chaing guide rails
-chain tensioner
for changing profile gasket i really need to get the head out?
-bearing shells we will inspect ,car has 300.000 km (about 230.000 miles) i've read somewhere that stock bearing aren't very good something related to 180 vs 360 oiling?what should get?

still i need few things to sort out i'm losing all fluids but it's almost intact and next year should be ready to go.
To be done:
-electric windows and mirrors wiring
-glove box to be mounted
-one last shadowline trim
-to sort out coolant and power steering leaks
-
Hi Alex
That looks really nice.
Best way to sort power steering leaks is get a e36/e46/z3 rack in, great upgrade too!
Do a bit of research to figure out which way you want to go with rack gearing though, before you buy one.
M42 engine is great, I would not think about m20. I don't like timing belts. M5*/s5* maybe.
As for getting a m42 up and going that's fairly easy.
Cheers Rohan

i already have the E36 steering rack .must be some other problem.
-
:) on the streets again.new radiator new fan clutch new brakes.Need to change the diff also.
-
Back , new diff 3.73 , new rear wheel bearings. I have some problems with AFM i think i have 2 pieces and one runs ok 1000 to 3000 rpm other runs ok after 4000 rpm.Now i have also a ebay chip from this guys https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-E36-318is-CHIP-TUNING-Made-on-Dyno-M42B18-15HP-20Nm-7000-REVLIMIT/171739034737?hash=item27fc71b471:g:5SUAAOSwa39UxopL&frcectupt=true
Anyone tryed a new AFM from ebay? like this
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=bmw+e30+318is+afm&_sacat=0&rt=nc&LH_ItemCondition=3
also i new new engine mounts originals are pretty expensive anyone tried condor mounts? https://www.condorspeedshop.com/products/solid-m42-motor-mount-set-uhmw?variant=228182334
Thanks
-
Nothing new, i've got a 4.45 diff that needs to be installed. Also need to repaind the bood lid and other minor cosmetics. I've remained with original AFM in the end , oh instaleed an Bilstein suspension
And one picture after it got caught by a snow storm , car was out of the garage and next morning ...

I'm looking for an ITB kit, for now Dbilas looks to be the only option in Europe, also I'm trying to find an MAF conversion kit does anybody knows if there is such kit for M42?
-
So this would be https://dbilas-shop.com/en/intake-tract/throttle-body-kit/street-version/bmw/m42/149/throttle-body-kit-for-bmw-e30-1-8-16v-100kw-m42b18?number=10.010.005&c=11152 does it make sense to go for a higher diameter 48mm or 50mm? Car is stock just a ebay chip and i think the head is from a M42 E36 should have 6mm valve stems .
RHD kit is nice but after taxes and shipping i think it would be double vs Dbilas.
-
Hey Alex,
This is a tough choice. It all depends on where you are going with the engine and it's development.
The dBilas unit is 45mm and they now have other options. The RHD drive option is 44mm.
I've had the dBilas and I would probably opt for the RHD if I were to do it again for the street.
For the track....I still have my slide throttle assembly sitting in a box. ;D
No matter what size you choose, you still need to have the engine tuned. My suggestion is to get rid of the AFM and go MAP with Alpha N.
Lots to think about my friend. I hope I didn't confuse you.
Cheers,

Hello, Warsteiner the ideea is to keep the engine stock(i mean after i bought the car engine was opened and we changed just he main crankshaft bearings everything was ok so we did not modify anything i was planning to do a stroker but parts were not available ) Now the plan is to raise the power using "bolt on " options as much as possible so plan is :
- ITB
-some aftermarket ECU i found this? https://lowcostracingsolutions.co.uk/pnp-standalone-ecu-s/56-119-bmw-e30-e36-e46-m50-m52-m54-m43-m42-plug-and-play-standalone-ecu.html#/39-accessories-just_ecu and Alpha N
My greatest fear is that i will not find some one that could program the ECU , i mean know "tuners" but this guys worked mainly on M20/M50 S52/S54 since the common practice was to throw the M42 at garbage and they are not very keen on working on this motors , usually they are saying get a 2.5 M50 and you will have the same power as an " tuned M42"
So to recap : bolt on's , internals = stock i camshaft will be stock if possible first step - ITB's then if all goes well Alpha N and ECU edit : well looks like Dbilas have also Alpha N https://dbilas-shop.com/en/electronic-system/engine-management/alpha-n-control-unit/bmw/2649/electronic-alpha/n-control-units-bmw-1-8-16v-m42b18-1.9-16v-m44b19?c=13217

Alex,
The biggest bang for the buck without doing a rebuild will be getting rid of the AFM and going MAP with Alpha N. Get your ITB's of choice. If you can do the cams now, then do them now and then get your tune with whichever standalone you choose. Talk to your local tuner and see what they like to use. The only other thing that will wake up the motor, but not add any HP but make it feel much better will be a lightened flywheel. Get one around 11-12lbs and made of steel if you can. You can take M20 FW's and swap the ring gear from your M42 or you can change the starter to an M20 with the M20 FW.
Those are my suggestions for you.
Good Luck!
Cheers,
~Ralph
