N/A e36 vert buildup here, street and Auto x/Track. I Have been lurking in the forums for a while & finally have some extra $$ to spare. So far : e36 96+ m3 front control arms and stock m3 Fcabs, O.E motor mounts & trans mounts, Bilstein reg shocks, H&R sport springs, 17"s , Goodyear eagle F1" , resonater delete with straight pipe, K&N air filter (got this 8 years ago but still works great been cleaned twice), Turner hi performance spark plug wires and Ngk plugs. And a new soft top. I Installed the strut tower bar from turner, the holes lined up nicely! Afterwards i took it for a drive and noticed a difference In how the car felt. surprisingly the front feels much more solid and is now more forgiving on big bumps in the road. The vert does come with the X-brace but the chassis could use more stiffining. Now every thing has a more tied together feeling. The only thing I didn't like was it only covers 2 mounting holes on the strut tower even though turners picture shows three :-X
(http://i589.photobucket.com/albums/ss338/tgoode318/Mobile%20Uploads/image-7.jpg).
-Lightly sanded Bmw logo on valve cover and the oil cap then painted them.
Tomorrow going to install the arca's and take it to a shop to get it corner balanced.
-
I Put the turner arca's in this weekend, initially i was worried about possible nvh from the spherical rod ends but they are fine by me! The only place you can really feel them is when there are a lot of cracks or big bumps in the road close together.

The Arcas helped fix my alignment, the M3 control arms were eating my front tires.

Looks like you're really into a few nice upgrades there - I'd guess an E36 'vert would be a great candidate to firm up.
Those 'before' alignment pics were pretty ugly; does the car feels dialed in?
-
The car for the first time since having the h&r's/bilstein put in feels dialed in. Before the car always had a lowered/slamed feel to it that never felt right and my wet traction was horrible, now my wet traction is great.
Installed the Turner Motorsport 30mm Front sway bar following Doug's domain guide. Decided on the turner because again of how much flex the vert has so i wanted to get the biggest bar. My First impressions, the car sits much flatter in the corners. Overall I'm very happy with every thing from turner all A+ quality components.
-
In the first pic the front of my car sat much higher in the front then the back. The h&r's didn't like 17s so I had a spacer. But A lower center of gravity is always good So I took my car to the number one ricer shop by me to get the fenders rolled. After rolling I was able to take the spacer out and fully lower her.
After doing that had multiple below freezing days and my engine went to crap idling terrible/ running with no power. First was throwing a 1226 code so changed knock sensor 2. Car had a little more power but was still idling way off also the 1226 was gone but now replaced with 1222 lambda problem. I Figured out most of my hoses were shot and my icv was clogged(UPDATE: and PCV was bad) A new icv is expensive so i decided to clean mine. When functioning properly (in a 94, not earlier models) you should feel a faint buzz on the icv unit with the key turned in the first position. Here is a simple overview for any one with a 93-94 m42 who wants to clean there's and not pay 200 for a new one. First take off the intake boots to hose clamps (red arrows are the two screws) (blue is the intake boot)
The next step is to remove the throttle body, it is held on by four screws. After removing the four nuts simply move the tb out of the way. (http://i589.photobucket.com/albums/ss338/tgoode318/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-01/F8B9BA51-CB27-413F-B290-8958DA38DCE8.jpg)
Next remove the intake manifold. To remove take the five hexnuts out and then pull it off. the one nut behind the manifold can be a pita I used a small hand wrench to get it. (http://i589.photobucket.com/albums/ss338/tgoode318/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-01/158DEA51-1E99-4DBA-AD38-E4D8EFECB626.jpg)
now access to the icv, here it is with the blue arrow
(http://i589.photobucket.com/albums/ss338/tgoode318/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-01/DADC8027-1EE9-4352-9B1E-7E7C06C48A68.jpg)
un strap the unit, remove its clip on electrical connector and its free. Remove icv and clean the inside with a old tooth brush and throttle body cleaner and your done! Installation is the reverse of uninstall.

Went to the store and bought the monstrous 32 mill wrench for 30 dollars!!! Then was ready to head to bmw stealer to get coolant but was promptly cut off by the wifey and was left with the decision of getting coolant or beer. Guys dont worry i made the right choice and got beer :)
-
That fan delete kit is a good setup. I ran that exact kit on my old F/I s52 m3 vert. Only time I saw the needle go above norm was sitting at loong stop lights in the middle of summer.
-
Was kinda worried about the FDM with out a spal fan but if you ran it with F/I then i should definitely be good. In the future if i ever have the extra $$ will probably spring for a electric fan just for added insurance.

Wow, I thought the ICV was in a pita place on our e30's?!

^^ When i found out it was under the intake mani instead of the fire wall i (-‸ლ) a little bit...

Finally Solved my Trouble Codes 8)!
Code 1286 Was solved by replacing the DME's Ground Wire And Properly Securing the DME on its Metal Shelf.
The Other Problem I had Was my instrument cluster gauges wouldn't work properly and i had to guess my speed/rpm most of the time.
This Luckly turned out to be a very simple fix that had most people stumped (i even took it by a shop and they said they had never seen code 1286 not to mention gauges acting in this manner.)
The relay contacts were very poor after 20 Years of use. In this Pic i sanded about half of the contact And voila no more instrument cluster problem's.

Did a little more work cleaning up under the hood. Cleaned up and painted the throttle body. Then i had an idea since i have 2 spare intake bellow's why not paint the intake Black And see how it looked? Not really thinking it would look good but figuring what the heck, I cleaned the boot with compressed air and then painted it jet black. The results were surprising it Looks better then a brand new OE in my opinion!

Drained Diff Fluid And replaced with Redline, They claim 10% drive train improvement over conventional... I don't know but it definitely feels much better cruising on the high way.

Also The stock rubber bushing on my diff were toast and felt terrible. When the suspension was stock it wasn't bad, but of late with every thing else done it became more and more noticeable and really felt sloppy. The Answer was of course turner! I almost went with AKG's all solid mounts but i have heard the delrin in the front will offer slightly less nvh then 100% aluminum. Needless to say the bushings gave me a fit trying to remove/install but in the end they surrendered, and the aluminum's went into their new home. I also Replaced the Front Diff bolt (Grade 8.8 ) With (Grade 10.9) which will hopefully prevent it from shearing on the track.

Oil Leak:
I Don't know how I didn't notice this before when i rebuilt the alternator but the oil filter housing gasket was the source of my leaks (of course..) gushing all over the place!! Cleaned up the gunk and replaced with a new gasket.
Fixed BUMP STEER:
Upgraded Tie Rods to Ground Control. One of The most over looked things when dropping the E30/36 is the effect's to
the cars roll center & bumpsteer. When the ride height is lowered the tie rods can't perform correctly. To correct this I contacted ground control, Turner doesn't offer this part and instead recommends stock bmw tie rod's? The install was not bad but it did require some slight modification to the spindle. My First impressions; All i can say is WOW, The effect this has had on the suspension is Huge! Any one who has dropped their car needs to run this set up the difference is like night and day.

Spark Plugs:
Replaced denso's with standard bosche plugs. The Denso's showed slight signs of blistering indicating the engine was running to hot :(
initially was going to blame the Fan mod Delete but then i remembered i was lazy and mixed the coolant by hand, so i drained a small amount of coolant from the radiator and replaced with distilled water/cap of water wetter. Now the engine is running at the proper temp.

nice!
out of curiosity how do you determine the correct spacer for the tie rods? I had a look at ground control website and they don't give much info...
and is it worth upgrading the tie rods for a small drop (less than an inch from E30 M-tech chassis) or only when going really low?
-
Yes unfortunately ground controls website doesn't give much info, like the part where the spindle had to be modified slightly. I will say though that they were the nicest guys i have talked to on a sales call, talked for about 15 min about cars and the weather so im sure they would be more then happy to help out with any problems that arose.
The tie rods themselves are adjusted via the spacer/shim.
What you want is Zero Bump.
First you Set up the car to race conditions i.e tire pressures camber, caster , toe, sway bar settings etc. make sure every things is torqued properly and the steering wheel is centered and locked. Then you measure from the ground to the ball joint write the number down. Disconnect the sway/springs and return the car to the proper height (the number you wrote down) Then with a bump steer gauge you basically jack the suspension through 2-3 inch of travel write down the results and then shim as needed. For instance if it toes in on compression and out on rebound then you need to adjust the outer tie rod.
To answer your question about do you need this setup its difficult to say, the only way to truly know is to get a bump steer gauge and do what i said above. Excessive bump over .050 will definitely slow you down and you will need to adjust this.
-
alright!
that's too race orientated for my little daily drive... but it's good to know!
thanks for your reply.

My buddy brought me a new front plate back from germany ;D he said they had hundreds laying to waste in the junk yards! Shame on BMW N/A for selling these 50$ a pop (cant really blame them though).

Long story short Due to dynamic Toe changes caused by F****D RTABS A order to Beamer world was in order. Even though ground controls & turners Solid RTAB is superior I cant handle any more nvh because i DD this car. Bimmerworld has a nice solution by having an internal solid spherical design/greasetrap limiting NVH compared to others on the market. While i haven't heard any noises (the main thing i wanted to avoid) There is a small amount of increased harshness but i can live with that.

About 60k ago when i replaced the originals with more oem (crap) rubber i did so with hand tools and a drill/chisel. Needless to say it took about 5 hours a side :-[ (Total 10 hours :( ) I promised if i ever had to do it again i would get the tool and an air compressor/impact.
so here i am 2 hours later :)

Flushed my power steering again and went with Royal purple ATF. RP fluids have been excellent to the 318 so I flushed my oem and went with this even though I flushed/replaced with oem fluid not long ago. My steering was feeling a tiny bit notchy and the RP made every thing smooth as silk!

Now that the suspension is done, I will be concentrating on The drivetrain and weight loss, no not me the car :)
M3 6speed is in the works with a light weight racing fly wheel and carbon fiber drive shaft.
-
If you're doing the CF driveshaft strictly for weight reduction, don't waste your money. The DSS CF driveshaft is the same or heavier than the 318 OEM shaft. OEM is just 20.37lbs with the guibo and center support bearing.
-
Im going for better control out of the corners, the cf has a better torsional spring rate compared to ALU. Also the benefits of acceleration/weight loss and better durability to the trans and diff are nice too. Another benefit is it eliminates the need to build a loop for the stock shaft since the cf will basically disintegrate under hard impact/stress.
-
Which CF driveshaft were you planning to purchase? The DSS product is advertised by them at 20lbs.
-
Yah the DSS isnt that great but it is lighter then the stock m3.
I was looking at getting a custom one made by BAC tech. They use superior technique/materials compared to DSS and should be able make one lighter & stronger. The only problem is the pricing might be astronomical but i have yet to iron out any details with them so who knows.

Hi tgood318
What's your review of the vac underdrive setup?
How much does it change voltage at idle, much change in water pump gearing?
Feel better to drive?
Cheers Rohan
-
Hey darky that's a good question. The voltage at idle has changed slightly but since I just rebuilt my alternator it isn't a problem. I could see someone with an old alternator (because they often don't charge at full capacity) or aftermarket stereo system having issues. There was also a change in water pump Gearing as you mentioned that combined with the Viscous fan delete forced me to compensate, fortunately it was as simple as changing my coolant ratio; I now run a 60% distilled water 39% Bmw Coolant & 1% water wetter in my setup as well as the lower temp themo and fan temp switch. Even on very hot days it runs without a hiccup. As Far as craftsmanship goes they are beautiful! Hands down the nicest piece I have put onto the car only rivaled by ground controls tie rods. After seeing the craftsmanship of the piece I will definitely be looking at VAC when my engine build starts. I have some port & polish experience on old school American v8s but after this I might just go with vacs stage 3 P&P.
Performance: These definitely had a positive effect on the engine, in combination with the FMD the engine revs much more freely. The top end really responded well and got some extra grunt for the last couple hundred RPMS as well as the increase in wanting to rev faster from the middle to the top. All in all it's the best "bolt-on" mod I have done. (Performance wires, K&n intake, FMD, silencer delete, underdrive pulleys)
