Title: M42 thermostat
Post by: slowklopdop on November 21, 2013, 06:43:59 AM
Just tried to replace my thermostat due to it being the reason why I get bad fuel consumption in my e30 m42 engine.

For people who have replaced their thermostat, does it sit properly in the cooling side of the engine without the need to hold it in place?
Both my old and new thermostat do not sit snuggly and perfectly in place but rather plop out is this normal?

Be sure the thermostat is installed with the flange side out and then the o-ring to the outside (closer to radiator).  Here's a link for the schematic (http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E30-4-doors/USA/318i-M42/aug1990/browse/engine/waterpump_thermostat/).

I use a 88 degree Wahler.  I noticed my car takes a while to warm up.  I wonder if I should switch to a 91.  What do you guys use?

I'm running the 91deg, it's very slow to warm up. I'd estimate 10-15 minutes before the gauge registers normal. I do have occasional cooling system issues, however.

Oh ok I don't feel so bad now.  I take around 10 minutes and my mechanic said that is about normal to get where it should be.
