Title: M42 Engine - Complete - Preparing for a swap
Post by: wake74 on October 20, 2013, 09:37:24 PM
I'm going to be pulling my M42 from my ' 95 318ti for an upcoming swap, and trying to determine if the engine has much resale value, and what that would be.  The engine has ~130k miles, and the following has been replaced in the last 1k miles (3 months):  water pump, thermostat, plastic coolant pipe, plugs, matched fuel injectors, belts, idle pulleys, vac lines, motor mounts.  Vehicle is daily driven.  It will be complete (engine, alternator, computer, wiring harness, intake, exhaust manifold), etc.  It is from a manual car.   Probably be sold without the AC compressor as I think I can re-use that on my conversion.

Engine is in central Florida, between Orlando and Tampa.  I would probably not ship it.

Anyone willing to help let me know what the resale value would be?  If you have interest in purchasing, I'll obviously be interested in that as well :-)

Thanks!

Glenn

I've seen them go for only $200-ish in good shape up here. I picked one up recently in trade for some computer assistance, with a good GM hydromatic. It even still had the wiring harness and all ancillaries! The M42 is seen as an econo-car motor and isn't a high-value piece.  You might get slightly more for it if you're willing to pull the head, chain cases & sump and wait for a buyer.  The block is nearly worthless for scrap - maybe $30?

You also have a late-production motor, that's both good and bad.
Good news:
Bad news:
Are you doing a swap yourself?  Post some pics - the E36 compact is a favorite of mine.  I'll have one of those (or a Z3) sooner or later.

Dave - Thanks for informative reply.  Assuming the 328 donor car has a functional tranny (seller says it does), the M42 will be coming with the 5 speed tranny.  I'm hoping to get more than $200 for the lump, but I guess we'll see when I get to pulling it in a few weeks.

Wouldn't happen to wanna sell me an Afm, would you? Oh, and a note as far as pricing... A forum member bought my disassembled engine for $275 sans intake. He drove from like Arizona to here in Florida too.
