Title: M42 race engine on a budget build...
Post by: waldobeemer on September 29, 2013, 06:46:58 AM
Hi I am new to this forum but have been a long term e30 fan. The dream has always been an e30 m3, but the costs have just gone silly, if only I bought one 13 years ago when I first got the itch!
Next best thing, the e30 318is a nimble, light and high reving 4 pot...

I am going to do a full race engine build on a budget to try and get e30 m3 power whilst keeping its displacement as is... I do hillclimbs so the 1400-1800cc category is perfect if I went for a stroker engine I would be up against to many turbo cars!

So I have my 1990 e30 318is, I have already poly bushes it throughout, added adjustable Koni's, upgraded injectors to the mustang v8's, had the stock flywheel machined from 12kg's to 6.5 and put in a stage two clutch and short shifter... These things alone transform the car and I have been beating mx5's, mr2's and golf gti's all season! But now I want to catch those lotus Elise boys...

The next stage of the build this winters is, e30 m3 throttle bodies I managed to source from eBay for £180. I have had a custom inlet manifold made by bogg brothers So they bolt straight on to my m42 head which cost me £265 to have made. Cat Cams 290 / 275 with solid lifters and double springs for £1500 and some CP pistons raising compression ratio to 11:1 at £600. A mls Comet head gasket will be fitted as well as new timing chain, crank seals etc. Fritz Bitz UK is going to do the build and Rich is hoping with an Omex ecu and tune we should get in the region of 210hp. So my dream of an e30 m3 will become reality for under £5000 and with an engine it's still easy and cheap to get parts for... Join me on Facebook as I will document build my user name is: waldobeemer and also see my hillclimb videos on YouTube under my name Graham Waldron I will post videos if build and tuning over the next month or so... Wish me luck!!!cc category is perfect if I went for a stroker engine I would be up against to many turbo cars!

make sure to post as much info and photo's as you can of the engine build etcetera, seems like a fun build and a nice package of upgrades.

why didn't you source a S50 ITB set and just removed the middle 2? these fit much easier and the injectors are perfectly centered due to the same engine design. the e30 m3 ITB's have a larger spacing and don't line up as nice in the center of the intake port. anything can be made to work though....

good luck with the build!

Good luck with your project - seems like you're well on your way to a strong E30.

Check out a few of the build threads when you get a chance.  Any details you can find on the Metric Mechanic Rally motor or the (semi-legendary) S42 motor are also well worth a look.

nice, good luck with the build. getting ideas and taking down notes as this build goes alone.
