Title: Rough / no idle after engine change
Post by: pilot300 on September 21, 2013, 08:20:09 AM
Hi everyone I am new to this forum but have searched and cannot find the answer I am looking for, hopefully one of you can help :)

Set the scene........

I have a 1995 BMW 318i convertible and completed an LPG conversion. Everything went well until the headgasket went. After stripping the head I noticed it was warped so decided to do a complete engine change.

The donor engine was from a 1999 318i with only 96,000 miles.

Whilst doing the engine swap I had to change the alternator brackets and pulley in order for the original power steering pump to fit. I also inspected and changed every sensor over from the old engine to the new engine (all sensors worked before the change) therefore the ECU should work as normal. I also used the original inlet manifold and fuel injectors as these are set up for LPG.

Since the engine swap the car will not run correctly and the symptoms are as follows:

With the AMF on and a cold start there is no idling and throttle is needed for the car to start.

With the AMF off and the engine cold, throttle is still needed however the car would idle but it would surge between 400rpm and 1300 rpm. there is a dead brake pedal too (signs of no vacuum)

With the AMF off i took the car for a run to warm it up. as it warmed up the car ran much smoother with better throttle response (to start with the throttle response was very patchy)

Once warm with the AMF still off the car would start without any throttle and have a rough idle but no longer surging, up to 1500rpm the throttle surges, after this it runs clean. once foot came off of throttle revs died right away and recovered slowly to idle by surging (still a dead brake pedal)

With AMF on and warm start no throttle is needed, idle is worse than with AMF off but still idling. The car revs fine however once foot removed from throttle the engine dies and does not recover. ( still dead pedal)

Can anyone help please???

If any more info is needed please ask.
