Title: this might be a crazy question... intake?
Post by: audirs7 on August 25, 2013, 12:24:51 PM
ive got an e36 318is with the 1.8L obviously... but bmw made a 1.9L... so is it possible to fit the larger intake manifold to the 1.8L?

1) I believe that the E36 M42 used DISA-1 and the M44 used DISA-2 intake manifolds, so the ECU may not be able to control the thing properly.
2) Moving intake manifolds around on cars with fully electronic engine management isn't going to help you without a custom tune. The power curve is dictated almost completely by intake and exhaust geometry, and changing either requires the fuel and spark to be tuned specifically for them.
3) I doubt that the intake is any "bigger" for the 1.9L vs the 1.8L.

A proper chip and lighter flywheel are the only low-hanging fruit on these cars. That's it. You aren't going to get any gains that come anywhere close to those two things for less than a few thousand dollars. Sorry, the M42 is a big assed iron-block engine that is 90% strung-out form the factory. The only way you will get more power form it is with higher displacement, higher compression, hotter cams and (most importantly) a custom tune for the engine that you do on a dyno with the built engine and an experienced tuner. I know that there are tons of other cars out there where you can get an extra 100HP for like $1000, but this isn't one of them.
