So I have come to realize that the MAF conversion needs an open element filter with a velocity stack...and the filter needs to be separated from hot under-hood air as my dyno runs showed me. Member "gjuuu" here came up with a very slick setup a while back, and had some templates on his site. I really liked the ideas, and elaborated on them. I give him credit for the concept and overall dimensions. His site is here:
http://members.dodo.com.au/~wawawa/
And the intake can be found through the menu to the left.
I built it from "sheetmetal" in the CAD program I use and it allows me to unfold the 3D form into a flat template. Though I am going to be road tripping this weekend, I will be cutting a prototype out on the bandsaw soon. Anyway, what started as a real simple project turned into something that probably belongs in the Artwork section. Oh well......
Once it has been test fitted, I will get some dimensioned drawings up and out into the community so everyone can cut their hands up on some sheetmetal! Misery...err hobbies love company?

Awesome,
I just moved my air filter, I haven´t hooked up the air temp signal as there was hardly any need for it, since the filter was always getting hot hot air.
But as soon as I moved it the air was that much colder that I need more advance just to even get the burn to stay in the combustion chamber,
I´ll be doing something similar to what you descibed, nothing as fancy but similar,
I´ll be connecting and tuning the air temp signal hopefully this weekend,
Other then the to cold air for the tuning the car is running really well

thats hot! damn you got skills with computers..

Do you have a template for that? I have a shear and brake available. Just curious if it was actual scale.

Been holding out on us eh!?!?!? Yes, this is actual scale. Like I mentioned, I started out solely drawing up a template for production, then got carried away after a Guinness. I will see about a cardboard mockup this evening, though I need to change oil and do a thorough inspection before I drive 290 miles tomorrow. Once I get it fitted around the ABS unit and have the air tube hole placed I will get some dimensioned drawings up.

Can you send me the DXF file ? If so I could plot some up on are large bed plotter. It would be very easy to make a template set out of paper or mylar.
-
Yeah I can do that. I need to make a mock-up first as this one has no provisions for the brake lines coming out of the ABS unit. Of course, I could always send this to you and have you play with it lol. I will look into making a D-size DXF tonight.

Very cool :)

Woa, dude, you've got an E21? :D
-
hey bro ur cad pic is awesome man...... thanks very much
do u have the measure man for it in urwebsite.

It looks like hot air from the radiator would heat up your cold air intake.
E21 with M42 is wayyy cool though! Good job on the swap!
-
Ramblin Man...I have always wanted an E21 w/ an M42. I am extremely jealous, just so you know.
-
I´m sure a O2 with a M42 is even more hot :)
I´d like one of those later
-
Clay if you're gonna make one, make one for me I'll drive up to austin :P
-
Ya, I got a helluva deal. Of course I'm the bastard step child no matter which forum I join. All of you guys have e30s so I have to glean what I can.
And bmwman91, dude, I'm the one who's jealous.
I thought about moving the airbox to the other side. The PO had started it over there I assume because he had eventual designs on a turbo. The ducting is the plastic stuff from Pep Boys. I'm hoping that the mirror polish will reflect the heat but we'll have to wait and see.

Very good looking engine compartment, but that metal intake tube might pick up a little heat from the radiator.
-
Like I said above, it's the chorme plated plastic stuff you can get at pep boys. I was hoping the chome would reflect the heat and plastic is a great insulator. I'm more concerned about the length than anything else. I may have to play with moving things around. I can always wrap it with the foil bubble wrap. I have a ton of that stuff from other projects.

This might be a strong possiblity for next season. ;)

I have a sheer, break, CNC mill, and CNC lathe available to me, so if you need anything cut out, let me know. I could also make those COP brackets for you bmwman91 if you like.

Silencer(not for automotive)? If I give you the specs?;)

haha if you have a drawing of it, and if its not to big i can probably do it for you.
-
you are the man at this CAD stuff!! Great work. Too bad my intake will be on the other side :(
-
With this thing the loud noise of cone filter will be more quiet? My K&N cone filter is too loud for my taste:confused:

Did you ever, Mock one up ? I would love to plot one, full size, and see if it will work.
