Title: 93 318is money shift disaster
Post by: E36m42 on March 25, 2013, 07:12:58 AM
Not new to the forum but just decided to register on the forum. I'm a member at bimmer forums (dbshiznit) but I feel likes can get much better help here for my problem.

Two days ago while trying to pass a trailer on the interstate I dropped the car down to 4th went around it and when I went to go back into 5th I went from top of 4th gear into 3rd needless to say it was not pretty.. Never has that happened to me I feel stupid... Well now I need you guys advice.

Car is running on three cylinders and I hear a ticking. I think I bent the valves on one of the cylinders. What do you guys think? Should I get another head or rebuild this one? If I rebuild it what upgrades to it could I do to have a few more horses? And since I'm taking the head off what is there for me to do as preventive maintenance? What should I look out for?

I really appreciate the help guys and trust me I really feel horrible about this money shift thing so don't bash me about it.

Probably you have bent intake valves, so you will need 8 intake valves. The mods you can do is increase compression ratio to 11:1 (piston valve pockets sould be made 1mm more deep)  and replace some worn parts on the way...

Oh ok thanks for the info  :) also on bimmer forums one of the guys put Volkswagen lifters and shrick cams and his engine is putting out 180HP at the wheels is there anything I can do like that or will increasing the compression alone give me a good push? I'm not looking for crazy power just some mild mods to increase the HPs and torque. Also I know the exhaust bolts are usually hard to get out.. Should I be ready with an extra pair of headers and bolts or will I be ok? Also what do you guys recommend for head studs? Head gasket? I know my head had a bit of gunk under the valves cover so is there a procedure to clean the bottom end to prevent oil clogging the ports?

Once again thanks for the help guys

.

If you can afford go for cams for sure. It is one of the best things you can do and with higher compression ratio you will have good power gain.
In catcams.be you can find what cams is still good for hydraulic lifters and stock springs.

You should buy new exhaust studs and nuts from local BMW dealer. For head studs and gasket it is simple: ARP and cometic ;)
