Title: New kid in the block
Post by: Shanto on January 27, 2013, 07:34:30 AM
Hi everyone,
Just acquired a new 318is.
The engine isn't in running condition.
Opened up the timing case to find the guide is broken and the chips in the sump.
I was thinking of rebuilding the engine but not sure what parts I can actually salvage as the chain, sprockets, pumps and the rubber gaskets seem to be in good condition. There is hairline cracks on the sump too so that needs to go.

It would be great if you guys can enlighten me with some crucial info.

Thanks

Before you go about replacing "everything"

Make sure you know for sure what is broken, make sure things like chains don't have mars in the and there is no damadge to sprockets/cams etc

most of the tensioners/ slap or guide rails are relatively inexpensive

Here is a good site to check out for engine diagrams:

http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E30/2-doors/USA/318is-M42/LHD/M/1991/browse/

when you need your parts and you figure out what needs replacing email Steve Blunt
Steve@blunttech.com

I order all my parts through him and he is 100% cheaper then anyone else or site, and will match or beat any price.

Let get some pics, and we will see if we can help you.
