I see conflicting information on the web, anyone know if the 1996 318i used the M42 or the M44?
Thanks,

I think I've answered my own question, according to realoem, the switchover happened in June of 95 (build date). A 96 might have an M42 or an M44 depending on when it was built.

Follow up question, if the car has an M42, anyone have a list of things to take to a yard to pull it?

They usually don't let us take hydraulics into a P&P up here, but they're willing to do the hard work for an additional fee.
I think the motor mount nuts are 19mm and a swivel u-joint with various extensions is very helpful. The tranny is a PITA with those reverse Torx, I'd be very tempted to drop the subframes and take the whole deal. Of course the harness and DME if available as well.
