I was discussing with a friend about how awesome that would be. Does anyone know if it has been done yet? If so I want to see links!! :D

318ix?

Better put a sc or turbo on it if you do.

I like the idea

Bet it'd be easier to do if the front axle didn't run through the oil pan!  Reminds me that those front subframes were a casting work of art.  Those must have cost BMW a pretty penny to make back in '89.

Check 'em out here at this old for sale thread (http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=87754).  It could be done, but I suspect you'd have to be some sort of masochist with a flair for alu welding!

It'd be cheaper and easier to start with a used X3 or some AWD 3-series xi.   Did they ever make either one with a 6-speed manual and a turbo 4-banger?

Tourings are sweet, no doubt about it.  25 years old makes for a DOT import exception...bring one over!

Do they even make the Touring models in the US?

Nope, never imported here.  There are a few that were legally imported and registered, but they are very rare cars in the US.

But with that 25 year exclusion in place it won't be long before you'll be able to import them.   Our '91s are getting old...mine was built in Aug 90 - that makes her nearly 22 1/2 years old!
