I just finished getting my M42 running again and its been a blast so far. Whats done to the car so far is...
Fresh rings and main bearings
new oil pump
new clutch
new ICV
new TPS
rebuilt head
new timing stuff
Fresher sport seats
Performance:
Urethane suspension bushings
eibach/bilstein suspension with strut tower braces
8lb flywheel
ss brake lines
kosie K1's
lsd
The car has been fantastic. I was actually dissapointed the car is so easy to drive with the 8lb flywheel since I really don't have to drive that much. Since the suspension and drivetrain are pretty much sorted out I'm trying to figure out where I should go next to make the car better. Any suggestions?

z3 rack, cams maybe, chip!

If I change the cams won't that require a retune of the engine and going to a different management system?
Sine the po took off the power steering pump I might look into replacing the steering rack since it seems to take way to long to go from lock to lock with the sportiness of the car.

just curious, how much did the rebuild cost you? i'm thinking about it myself...

If the car is solid and reliable - spend $$ on driver related stuff and disposables. I.e. HPDE, Auto-x, Oil changes, Tires :D

Wich Rings You Used Standard 0 or 00(84.00 or 84.25)?

The rebuild on the lower cost around 800 bucks. Thats will all parts and labor. I worked with northern cylinder head which is north of minneapolis in MN. I pulled the engine out myself and brought the head and lower end over to there shop.
The hardest part of the whole experience was trying to find rings for the engine. We were able to find one vendor who said he had a set and when they arrived they turned out to be the wrong ones... Anyways, it turns out the standard ring size is identical to a older toyota engine, can't remember the name off the top of my head.
I also had to find a donor block since the po drove the car with coolant in the oil and in the process destroyed the oil pump and did alot of damage.
Originally we thought the engine was only going to need some headwork and a new headgasket but that wasn't the case and the project spiraled away from there.
The project cost around 4000 dollars total and out of the deal I have a fresh engine, clutch, and most electronics. If I had to do it again I would definitely go for a rebuild again instead of just swapping in a less mileage engine.
I was also able some nice sport seats to swap in to replace the ebay special racing seats for 60 bucks at a local junk yard!
