it is a x50 turbo manifold that I picked up. I still need to trim off 2 of the pipes but it will be great. I'm really excited how well made it is and how well it should spool.

how difficult is it going to be to trim of the 2 pipes? how much ya score it for if you don't mind me asking.

yeah it won't be too bad to take two off. I'm going to cut them off and head to Korman to weld it all back up. I'm also going to put in a pipe for an external wastegate. This is the manifold thats on ebay, I bought it from the seller ETD Motors (http://stores.ebay.com/ETD-Motors). I may buy some more and fix em up if more people are interested. They look awsome and you would never guess that it was in that price bracket. The should spool quite a bit faster than jon's and way less $.

cutting them right off should make it perfect for a M42,
And welding that closed shouldnīt be a problem
why didnīt you get one of those $450 turbo kits, intercooler, manifold, turbo even??

Theyre cheap b/c they're made from thin materials, assembled for dirt cheap in asia, then electropolished to hide any welding flaws. Theyre all of the same construction as the ssautochrom, obx, etc etc that we've all heard stories about since the beginning with the honda kids.
Nothing against other options on the market. Ive just been around doing this thing for way longer than Ive been into BMW's and have seen my fair share of this stuff before. You get what you pay for.

cutting them right off should make it perfect for a M42,
The runners your talking about are 1 and 2. This is a bottom mount manifold. Flange is too close to the head to be used as a top mount and youll probably need to make a custom motor mount to clear the compressor housing. But im sure he'll figure that out when he bolts it on.

Ahh I see, I can see how it would interfere with the head, although it should work as a bottom mounted manifold then anyway, if room allows it too,
I can see that the downpipe might be at a hard angle clearing the firewall

Jon they are mostly cheap because they are greatly mass produced,
All those ssautochrome manifold and xs power are all made in the same factory. So itīs a factory that just makes manifolds probably around the clock even
I have seen one of those ebay units on a Nissan, and even after a few years of abuse it still hasnīt cracked yet, although the chrome is fugly now but the manifold remains intakt and the turbo wasnīt braced to the motor but hanging from the manifold with the exhaust hanging on it as well,
What I hear is that there quality has gone up, but not enough so all manifolds give the same results, some give great lasting while others donīt make it down the street, all coming from the same place and looking identical

I use to have the bottom mount manifold on my car, it was the biggest nightmare squeezing everything down there. Hopefully you wont run into so many problems like I did. I went to the plumbing supply store and made my own top mount manifold out of weld together fittings for and it is so much easier.

jon actually the welds are awsome and so is everything. they are really thick and I just can't find any probs with it. They smoothed out the welds on the inside of the pipes perfect and the outside is also VERY clean. They are mass produced so they are much cheaper. For the record my friend has one of the SSautochrom headers for a NA and it has held up great and actually helps power. SSautochrom used to be a bad company but since the complaints they have stepped it up and have really nice quality. Also it is a TOP mount manifold. You can put them on upside down for a bottom mount also but they are designed as top mounts. And to your question about spool time Jon, it will spool considerably faster b/c of the short pipes. Equal length is better for a dyno queen but lets be real, this is a 4 cylinder ;)
For the $ saved in this manifold you will have more $ for things like a more efficient turbo etc.
Gunni I would have bought one of those kits but I already had everything but the manifold and I kick myself for it but I still got a great deal on all my parts. So no harm ;)
I will find out how much time and $ goes into cutting and rewelding these and get back to you guys. Even w/ the price of a great welder I really can't see these being more than like $400 shipped in the US.

First off my manifold is a short tubular design. Its far from equal length. There's probably no measureable difference in spool time between the two. If anything my collector design is smoother.
Id like to see a turbo bolt onto that flipped upside down (attached to the head that is). Im guessing you havent tried yet.

Heres why.
Turbo scrolls toward the valve cover. (unless its bolted on backwards in which it will hit the shock tower.

Note the direction the turbo scrolls in relation to the manifold. It will be reversed up top.

Compare to a flange location thats designed specifically for the motor/chassis combo.

It fits great. How thick is your flange and piping? And the manifold I bought IS A TOP MOUNT. Once I cut it up and all I'll post up pics of it on the car. The M42 is at an angle, but the turbo will still be able to clear the VC/head.

1/2" thick flanges, ~1/8" piping.

the one I bought is 12mm flange and 44mm pipe. I appreciate your pics and consern. But I think that you missed the part about me making a spot for the external wastegate. So there is a good chance than the turbo position will be moved slightly.

Looks like it should do the job well for the price. Jon's manifolds are much superior though, both in design and build quality.

I've heard somewhere that you take a factory manifold, cut the manifold and weld a turbo flange on. Then mount the manifold upside down. I don't know if that will work but it is an intresting idea. Either way, I curious to see if it would be worth the time and effort by going the ebay way. I've seen the prices at the Korman site, ouch. Anyway, Asubimmer, I rootin' for ya.

Screamer I actually have a spare stock manifold here and it could work but the ebay one should be less work and it is more bling lol. If anyone needs a stock manifold let me know before it ends up on ebay!

What about exhaust pulses? It seems that the exhaust manifold pipes are not equally long, which affects the pulse waves. How is that taken into account in that design?

as I know for turbo engine it is not so important.

of course itīs important, it maximises efficiency of the manifold to flow pusles into the turbo without interference from the diffrent pulses

No itīs actually more and quicker spool and better scavenging of the cylenders

With turbo motors it is more important than in NA engines. It really can affect the performance of the turbo, if the exhaust pulses are not taken into account in the manifold design.

wow so much has happened since i have been in the SUCK. To be honest with you yes jons products are tested,tried and true to be a great product, but its an indefinate monopoly due to the fact no one else makes something for a better price(albeit cheaper product) and I had my hand in the manifold that asu chose back in november and with my collective 5 years turbo experience and asu's experience....and Korman, i have a good mindset that this will work, yea it may need tweaking but hell....even with minor tweaking and adjustment the thing will still be affordable....a few ponies that are bled off due to inefficiencies doesnt really matter in the twistys as where this car is designed for....but this is all just an IMO session. Good job asu looks great and hopefully i can get all my stuff together again, im the only e30 on base hah, and maybe by summer the only boosted e30, got the hobby shop and lifts to make it happen now!

well its great, it still is in peices but next time I go home I am having it welded up by a mechanic at Korman that has been working there longer than I have been alive lol. I didn't have time to have it welded before I came back up to app. While its not going to be the same as jon's its going to be considerably cheaper and I'd venture to say they won't perform much different either. I would be glad to test his if he sent me one to see if it was even a noticable difference ;)
