Kid was home last night and car didn't leak a drop in the driveway.
As with every time he is home; I check the motor oil and power steering fluid and topped them both off.
He calls me today from college and tells me it's dripping a drop a second as it's parked at school and the dipstick is showing no oil.  I asked if the dipstick was seated and if the valve cover cap was on as you never know, I might have forgotten?! So he's 40+ miles away my options are to drive down there with all the oil I have, fill it up and drive it home keeping an eye on indicator lights? Or wait a day or two and borrow a truck to tow it home.

He stated he didn't bottom out on pan recently(especially in past 24hrs) so I am guessing at this point; oil filter housing, o-ring(s) and/or pan gasket(s)?

Worst case it might need a new lower pan so if you have one to sell? PM me please.

Oh well. It's simply another step of the adventure we call life.

Gah.  Here's hoping it's a simple fix - maybe a loose cap on the filter housing or something like that.

Well.. It could be worse?
Approx. 1" crack on passenger side of lower oil pan.
Ordered replacement pan, gasket, thread lock and gasket adhesive on my way back.
Plan is to swap it out in his apartment complex parking lot.  Going to replace the filter housing/block gasket & o-ring and check/pull?/thread-lock? all 6-upper pan bolts while I am at it. I'm guessing the EPA night show up at his doorstep if we wait too long. Put a pan under it while it sits and waits for parts to arrive.


Anybody got a diy link for pan gaskets for M42? It seems rather easy but wanted to make sure I have all the proper tools packed before heading down.

All fixed. It was actually the easiest 'oil pan' I have ever replaced?!
Slight error in guess on the length of the crack...

The lower oil pan is, thankfully, SUPER easy to deal with. I busted a hole in mine in ~2006 and put a good 70000 miles on it with JB Weld slathered on the outside as a patch. I did remove and clean it first, though.

For the pan gasket, I recommend applying a THIN coat of Permatex Ultra Grey silicone RTV to both the lower & upper pan mating surfaces. That will keep the lower pan gasket from leaking. Actually, you would be A-OK JUST using the RTV and no gasket. Again, a thin coat on each side (run a bead and spread it with a finger).

Guess he tagged an exposed sewer access that was exposed due to all the street re-paving.

Even with the oil pan guard on it?! He states it's leaking profusely. :(

Anybody have some spare springs taking up space in their storage they want to get rid of?!

Again?!? I'd consider installing M20 springs as a mild form of punishment, LOL. I'm not looking forward to when my kids are driving...especially the older one. Nothing is ever her fault.


I'll bet my stock springs have saved my motor a few times. I have a set of brand-new ST 40/40mm lowering springs still in the box; you're persuading me not to install them...

Tell him to fix it himself.  It's not a hard process, if he's going to keep breaking them he can start fixing them.  As they say teach a man to fish...

He did most of the work the last time so he knows how to do it... Only took he doesn't really have is the in.lbs torque wrench.
He's currently a full time student in UC's DAAP program with a 25hrs a week job so he really doesn't have allot of 'spare time' so I completed the fix this morning. Glad I took a big ass hammer with me to pound out the plate. The passenger side of pan was crack both up the pan and front to back.

Is this a raceskids plate?  You might want to upgrade to a heavier duty skid plate like the one from E30motorwerks.

Yep, Race Skids plate I ordered from Garagistic... I was under the impression that was the THE ONE to buy.

I told him if it happens again I will hand him the keys to the $600 Honda Accord I just picked up and sell his car?!
Hopefully this threat helps him keep his eyes on the roads.

that frame bar would definitely be stronger than the lower radiator support tin the current one is bolted to?!
