Title: Good Alternator/Starter Repair Shop Reference
Post by: bmwman91 on December 07, 2006, 12:20:40 AM
This seemed the most appropriate forum to put this in, so here it is.

San Jose Generator & Starter

I had my alternator crap out on me one night.  By random chance I found these guys on Google, and they were the only shop I called that specialized in rebuilding alternators & starters.  I took it in the NEXT day to these guys, and 3 hours later it was ready to go.  The service was fast & friendly, and the owner was quite knowledgeable.  There are 2 levels of overhaul they offer on alternators:

One...they just replace any bad diodes on the rectifier plate, and possibly brushes...you will need to ask.  $55.  I opted for option 2:

Two...new brushes, diodes, regulator, bearings, and I think they refinish the slip rings.  On top of that, they hot-tank the outer casing and ferrous core, bead blast the casing and re-coat the core with varnish.  Total, $110.  Well, $119.50 after CA sales tax.  The unit was good as new, for 1/3 the cost of a rebuilt one through a parts supplier!  A big +1 to these guys!  Who knows, you might be able to call them up and ship them yours to be rebuilt.  Call and ask!

Link to the D. Clay limp along a little bit more fix. It's usually the bearing or the regulator anyway. Bearing is about $7.50.
