From a thread about my new M42 manifolds came up the topic of skidplates for the M42. I test fit the usual M20 piece to the 318is I have in the shop and it will require a different plate to be made. It will be of the same type of contruction as the current plates except the bends will be in slightly different locations to allow for the deeper sump and such of the M42. These will of course have a properly locate drain hole for oil changes without removing the plate.
Pricing will be the same as the M20 plates at $185 shipped. We're currently quite busy at the shop and need at least 4 pre-paid orders to commit the time to mock up a new plate and produce them. It seems like theres enough interest in them. We can definately get them shipped off to you in time for Christmas as well.
Orders must be placed by Wed. Dec. 13 and will be produced on Friday of that week. We have a few projects that need to get done this month so this is the only opportunity we'll have for a few weeks.
Orders can be placed through here. http://www.666fab.com/misce30.html

Personally, I want one but have to wait until after the Christmas spending is done and paid for.
-
do you know about how much they weigh?
-
I would be very interested, but as nick asked, I would need to know how much they weigh?
-
Without having a super accurate scale around 3-4lbs is a pretty safe estimate. Definately not any sort of noticable weight addition.
-
awesome - thanks!
My concern was shipping to PR (same USPS rates as the mainland)
Thanks again
-
Preorder payment sent, thanks! Keep me posted.
-
why can't you wait until Jan. when I have the $$.

ditto.
christmas > me

Gotta do it now because I actually have a 318is in the shop. Need a few pre-orders in order to cover r&d time. Theyll be available for order down the road for those lacking funding at the moment.
-
Anyone else in on this? Come on, folks!!
:D
-
I'm with everybody else on this one. I would definitely order one down the road, but now is a bad time.
-
So am I the only one? I could pay for three more, then resell them at a considerable markup.... :)
-
did this happen or not? pics?
-
also, how about making some sort of an X brace?
-
Yup, got the first run done. I just need to take pics and get them shipped out. Half of the aluminum I ordered didnt get sent out till after the holidays so we got held up a bit. Pics soon.
-
don't you think aluminum is too soft for a skid plate, and will fatigue fairly quickly?

for offroud I think is too soft, but for daily use is good, and composite will be fine too. :)

i'v smacked mine around pretty good for the 2 years i'v had one, good enough that an aluminum would be pooched by now. but there is a couple shitty roads around here, and the odd rock on the road that you can't avoid once its too late...
-
Aluminum does just fine for a daily driver or road race type car. I would not recomend it for rally racing though. Its primarily to prevent oil pan failure for things like unseen speed bumps and such. Its 1/4" thick at the bend/lowest point of impact and the reversed ramp shape will cause the car to "slide" over the obstruction rather then the point of impact being a vertical wall that is your oil pan. Coming off a dirt jump and landing on small boulder is not this skidplates purpose. :D

fair enough, but from what has managed to smack my skid plate in these past 2 years would have eat'n through an aluminum one by now is all that i'm saying. for those in the city who see the odd rock it bet it will be great, but there is a lot of construction around here right now...

skidplate will not help you if you hit big stone. Better try google and will see how WRC skidplate looks like. In my country rally teams use 4-7mm skid plates (sometimes with subframe).
-
i am interested now that i have some cash
2nd run anytime soon?
-
The first run just covered the current orders. Theyre available for order at any time. Just expect approximately a week before shipment in most cases. Ill have pics when im back in town after new years.

mines 5mm i believe

guess I should visit more often.
I think I'd like one of these items. There are more and more tank traps er, I mean speed humps growing in my area. seems like a good plan B, esp when I put those race springs on....

pics of plate and it installed????

Any chance of getting one in a steel to use for Rally-x?
-
I would contact him at 666fabrication.com, he isn't around here much.

I am pretty sure they do not make the skid plate anymore, however, you may be able to find one through the grapevine from another enthusiast.

Based on this picture:

If it does, it looks like you could just make another cut-out where our oil bolt is.

Except cutting the material weakens it somewhat.......
I see some other's on ebay that appear to have the hole in the correct spot for our motors, along with a lower price it seems.....
Installation looks like it could be a totally different story however....

Are the ebay ones youre referring to the ones made by Eric in Vancouver, WA? If so, they're AWESOME quality. He sells them on the r3vlimited forum.

Not sure, I see them go on and off here and there, they look nice though.

look up the user "ejnight" on R3vlimited.com if you want to get the best skid plate on the market.

Yes, I checked the picture, that is the one I am referring to.
They look nice!

Any chance these can be made? Hartge designed, no drilling required.

Hey guys, thought you would like to know, I am/have developed a 'Severe Duty' Skid Plate that is currently for sale. Right now it is dialed in for the M20.
I am working on developing the M42 design, basically its just drilling out a hole for the front facing drain plug.
These skid plates went through 3 prototypes before final production was done. This is a professional product and will protect your oil pan from anything the mean streets can dish out. I have smashed concrete cinder blocks, done death drops onto bricks, 50mph impacts on dips, 20mph over speed bumps, 5mph impacts into curbs.
Your oil pan is safe.
Here is a link to it on E30Tech for those of you interested.

Looks like a well thought out design. Only part I don't like is the welding required. Not sure if I want to pay $250 and still some more $ to have someone weld.
-
man, those factory skid plates are ugly.
