$700 is a little steep tho. Something a bit more managable would be in the price range of $300-400.

$700 is cheap for that quality of work. All tig welded and SS.

Compaired to a similar Full Race brand tubular manifold for a honda this is a STEAL!

I bet Full Race has sold HUNDREDS of their manifolds and they still cost 975.

I just double checked... they now run 1199 TO 1499.

If I were building that manifold, and I could, they'd be the same price.

This explains why BMCrace now has M42 head flanges... it also tells me that 666fab shops at BMC just like I do :D

It does suck though... you lose the coil packs, washer bottle and A/C and you still have to dent the frame rail to make it fit.

that manifold rocks!  if i were goin turbo, i would care less about the A/C, i would switch to COP conversion, and the washer bottle could be swapped to a 325ix (which is what i am swapping to anyway). as for the frame rail, oh well its all for a common good :D

Hi guys, you keep the coil packs, you just relocate them to the tray behind the shock tower. A/C should still fit with a little tweaking and some heat wrap for good measure. Also the frame rail pinch weld is all that gets bent. The manifold physically fits w/o doing that but Im not comfortable with as small of a clearence that your left with. If you ever take it off you can simply bend it back into place. Youll be cutting your car to fit an intercooler anyway so a slight bend to keep the runners from being kinked with a bunch off-tangent cut bends is more desireable from both performance and assembly aspects.

P.S. that motor was running strong but is just half disassembled. The car is being built in conjunction with another shop for a customer and is getting a fully built motor and intake manifold as well ;)  Intake manifold will also be available for sale once its complete.

I look forward to seeing that intake mani. The one you have for the m20 is sick. Reminds me of the GReddy intake for the Nissans.

Oh and welcome to the forum!

All of the fabricators I spoke to about a custom manifold quoted at least 2X that asking price.

I wanted to do something special with one of these cars... which is almost exactly what Jon is doing. Now I don't feel so bad about bailing on my project.

jon i hate you for ever making that turbo manifold for our cars... seeing that makes me want to throw out my current plans for my car and start brainstormin for a turbo setup =\

Checked fitment of the skidplate and its going to require a different plate than what the M20 powered cars use. We're pretty busy with work at the moment so taking the time to make an M42/318is skidplate would probably require a few pre-orders...like 4 or so to get the ball rolling. Ill make a post on r3v and e30tech tommorow as well to see if theres enough serious interest.

Ballpark quote?  I'm in - I'm too low to comfortably drive around DC. I like to think that I know where all the dips are around here (besides the ones behind the steering wheels!), but I *do* venture out of my area once in a while...

So, count me as one.

Ive got one sold going on a road race car so far.

I think some may be a little gun shy due to the fact that not many people have turbocharged m42s before. They're no different than any other motor. Its all just boost, fuel and ignition timing :D

Based on what I have learned, the M42 from an E30 is an ideal candidate to boost.  It has forged internals, oversize valves (relative to later M42/M44 motors) and stiffer valve springs.  I'm not crazy about the throttle body, and there are few options for an oil cooler but I think it will make a good candidate to run with a turbo.

For those interested in wastegate placement.

Room for a 3" downpipe......3.5" if you massage the firewall a bit.

Jon,

Based on the pics it looks like the turbo mounts with the shaft parallel to the wheels/drive shaft (left to right) as opposed to front to back?  I guess I was expecting the compressor intake to face foward, as opposed to facing the passenger side.

The turbo in that picture your looking at isnt bolted on. The manifold is just resting on it for the photo. Turbo is placed just as you would expect facing forward as seen here.

The customers car in the pics should be done by mid Jan. so I will have the intake designed and finished by then. Im still planning the best course of action for the runners. Being rectangular may lend itself to putting a taper on them runners which would be ideal. Once I get that planned out itll just be a day or two to make up the first one.

Jon,
What critical dimension(s) do you need to fit this manifold on a chassis other than the E30 / E36?  I have my M42 installed on an E21 and am in the market for a manifold.

Yikes, that looks tight. I dont think I would feel comfortable making a manifold in something that confined without having the vehicle at the shop. You wouldnt happen to be local to us would you? (Milford, CT)

Try Tucson Arizona Ha ha.  It looks tighter than it is.  I painted the engine bay black (don't ask...).  I can get some better photos / measurements.

Could someone be so kind as to take a T-square to their valve cover and measure from each valve cover bolt to the fender to see if my exhaust side is as close as the ones in E30 models or E36's?
